MHBK Participates in Critical Discussions on Mining Concessions for Religious Organizations and Their Impact on the Environment

Keluarga Muslim Fakultas Hukum Universitas Gadjah Mada (Muslim Community Faculty of Law UGM) X INTEGRITY Law Firm, collaborated with the Muslim Community of FISIPOL and the UGM Student Executive Board (BEM KM UGM) organized a discussion on the theme: “Mining Concessions for Religious Organizations: In Whose Interest?”

The event took place in the Faculty of Philosophy's Unity Room, Gadjah Mada University (UGM) or via Zoom Meeting on Tuesday, August 13, 2024, from 12:30 PM to 3:30 PM WIB. One of the keynote speakers was Dr. Totok Dwi Diantoro, S.H., M.A., LL.M., Secretary of the Master of Business and State Law Study Program at the Faculty of Law, Gadjah Mada University (UGM).

In his presentation, Totok critically reviewed the potential "environmental sin" that could arise from granting mineral and coal mining concessions to religious organizations. He also highlighted the significant changes in Law No. 3 of 2020, which revises Law No. 4 of 2009 concerning Mineral and Coal Mining.

Furthermore, Totok explained that granting mining concessions to religious organizations has the potential to justify the exploitative nature of the mining industry. He also raised the issue of criminalization of communities that oppose mining activities, as well as the negative impacts on the environment and indigenous communities.

This discussion touched on several aspects of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), namely Goal 15 on Life on Land and Goal 16 on Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions. Furthermore, the discussion was part of an effort to raise public awareness about the impacts of mining policies on the environment and communities. It is also hoped that this event will foster constructive dialogue on crucial issues in the mining industry in Indonesia.

This activity also reflects the important role of universities, particularly UGM, in fostering critical discussions on public policies that have broad impacts on society and the environment. It is hoped that forums like this will generate solutions for achieving more equitable and sustainable natural resource management in Indonesia.
