Department of Islamic Law Faculty of Law UGM held an Inaugural Lecture and Book Review on “Introduction to Islamic Law and the Institutionalization in Indonesia”

Department of Islamic Law Faculty of Law UGM held an inaugural lecture for Islamic Law and the Book Review for the book entitled “Introduction to Islamic Law and the Institutionalization in Indonesia”. This event is a collaboration with Research and Publication Unit (URP) Faculty of Law UGM that was conducted hybrid on Monday (12/08/2024). 

There were approximately 200 participants from undergraduate program, both from regular class and IUP class that attended this event in-person in Auditorium Gedung B Faculty of Law UGM. Meanwhile, 65 participants consisting of students, lawyers, academics, and members of the general public joined online via Zoom Meeting. Most of the online participants were members of the Indonesian Association of Islamic Law Lecturers (ADHII) and the Indonesian Association of Islamic Economic Law Educators and Researchers (APPHEISI).

This time, the inaugural lecture & book review presented the Professor from Faculty of Law Universitas Diponegoro and also the Chairperson of APPHEISI, Prof. Ro’fah Setyowati, S.H., M.H., Ph.D. During the lecture, Prof. Ro’fah presented the urgency and the relevancy of Islamic Law learning to the law schools. Prof. Ro’fah explained about the institutions and the development of the regulation related to the Islamic Economic Law development. Several regulations have been enacted such as Law Number 21 Year 2008 concerning Sharia Banking, Law No. 19 Year 2008 concerning State Sharia Securities, and others, including the existence of Fatwa DSN-MUI that have been accommodated by several regulations. An important message that Prof. Ro’fah conveyed was that it is important to study and understand the Islamic Economic Law, for both Muslim students and non-Muslim students. This is because Islamic Economic Law has been positively implemented in Indonesia.

Besides Prof. Rof’ah, a lecturer from Faculty of Law Universitas Indonesia and the Chairperson of ADHII, Dr. Widyaningsih, S.H., M.H. also attended this seminar as the second speaker. Dr. Widyaningsih explained about the Islamic marriage and inheritance law in both theoretically and practically. Not only about the Law Number 1 Year 1974 concerning Marriage, but also explained about the interreligious marriage that recently became a social phenomenon. According to her, law students needs to catching up with the current dynamics that occurred within this society.

Meanwhile, the book review for the book entitled “Introduction to Islamic Law and the Institutionalization in Indonesia” was delivered by one of the writer, Dr. Destri Budi Nugraheni, S.H., M.S.I.. In general, Dr. Destri explained that this book preparation was based on the interest in reconstructing the Islamic Law courses in the Faculty of Law. For years, Islamic Law courses in Indonesia are referred to the book entitled “Islamic Law: Introduction to Islamic Law and Islamic Law System in Indonesia” by M. Daud Ali. The said book that was written by one of the lecturer from Universitas Indonesia itself have been used as the reference in many Law Schools in Indonesia. In addition to Dr. Destri Budi Nugraheni, S.H., M.S.I, this book was also written by lecturers from the Department of Islamic Law, Faculty of Law, UGM, namely Haniah Ilhami, S.H., LL.M., Dr. Hartini, S.H., M.Si., Dr. Khotibul Umam, S.H., LL.M., and Dr. Yulkarnain Harahab, S.H., M.Si.

This inaugural lecture and the Book Review then closed with the interactive question and answer session and the deliverance of a closing statement from the speakers. In this event, the participants seemed enthusiastic with the material presented by the speakers.
