Mock Trial on Currency Counterfeiting Presented at Bank Indonesia Institute's SPR-1201 Certification Program

The UGM Faculty of Law, represented by the Satria Paramartha Moot Court Organization, staged a mock trial involving criminal offenses against the Indonesian rupiah as part of the SPR-1201 Certification Program on Banknote Features, Counterfeiting, and Legal Aspects (Wave 1). The mock trial, held on Thursday, March 21, 2024, was conducted in collaboration with Bank Indonesia Institute and featured four Bank Indonesia participants in the role of expert witnesses for the prosecution.

The case centered on a currency counterfeiting scheme perpetrated by a woman who ran an online business, operating through the social media platform Twitter, offering counterfeit banknotes under the guise of the State Currency Printing Company (Perusahaan Umum Percetakan Uang Republik Indonesia/Perum Peruri). The counterfeit notes were sold at twice their face value, targeting buyers in Yogyakarta and surrounding areas.

The victim was a teenager burdened by an online loan (pinjaman online) debt and was enticed by the offer. She eventually completed a transaction, paying IDR 5 million in exchange for what she believed to be IDR 10 million. When she attempted to deposit the money at an ATM and the transaction was rejected, she immediately reported the incident to the Sleman District Police (Polresta Sleman). Acting on the report, the investigating unit conducted an undercover buying operation, posing as a customer of the defendant's business. The sting was successful, and with sufficient evidence gathered, the case was brought to trial.

The Satria Paramartha members who performed in the mock trial were Cindy Aulia, Nazal Sultan, Natashya Enggal, Aning Fadilla, Aliya Gita, Diva Aulia, Fighaniyya, Selly Dea, Ahmad Lutfi, Rizal Wafaqih, Tiffany Pryanka, Tifa Azizah, Nashya Chernova, Shavrizzal Azam, Febby Aulia, Jihan Izza, Pilar Anggit, and Annisa Heriartiva, with Dayu Prabayanti serving as supervisor.

This activity reflects the SDGs, specifically SDG 4 (Quality Education) and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals).
