ALSA LC UGM is back with DIALEKTIKA on Saturday (18/5/2024). On this time DIALEKTIKA #5, ALSA LC UGM brought the theme Labor Welfare Towards Industrial Revolution 5.0. This theme was chosen in order to discuss the effect of technological development towards labor welfare.
The discussion opened with the talk about the Industrial Revolution 5.0 that focuses on the integration of human and technology in order to improve efficiency and productivity through Artificial Intelligence (AI), Internet of Things (IoT), robots with human skill, and innovation in supporting the sustainability and welfare of the public.
Despite the advance civilization that shows the technology development that could optimalize time, effort, and cost in doing a certain job, there are several obstacles and contradictions that surfaces as the development of technology, especially with AI. Main topic of this issue is the concern on the human works can be replaced by AI, which leads to increasing number of unemployment because companies prefer to use AI which is cost and energy efficient compared to human labor which is prone to human error.
During the discussion session, the participants are openly enthusiastic about responding to this issue. The participants argued the benefits and scale of assistance provided by AI are considered highly helpful for many workers in certain fields as well as for the general public. However, over time, excessive use of AI has begun to pose a threat to workers in Indonesia, particularly those in the creative industry
Putri Widhyasititi argued that the cause of this is the lack of the awareness and Indonesian’s knowledge in utilizing AI properly, additionally, Indonesia has not yet providing a legal protection for workers in those fields. Nabil Zaidan Hermawan added that the execution of AI in Indonesian workfield needs to be balance with the development of Human Resources, along with providing the legal enforcement so that workers from many fields would have a strong legal basis.
From this discussion, it is expected that the participants can prepare themselves in facing Industrial Revolution 5.0 and can also encourage changes in labor policy by providing legal protection for workers who are vulnerable to being replaced by AI, which could result in increased unemployment
