Islamic Law Department of FH UGM Discusses Islamic Law Curriculum Development through Academic Benchmarking Visit with the Faculty of Law of Syiah Kuala University, Aceh

Banda Aceh, 4 June 2026 – The Islamic Law Department of the Faculty of Law, Universitas Gadjah Mada (FH UGM), conducted an academic benchmarking visit to the Faculty of Law, Syiah Kuala University (FH USK), Banda Aceh. Held at the FH USK Hall, the activity was part of an effort to strengthen the quality of legal higher education through curriculum development, teaching methods, and the implementation of Islamic Law education.

The Islamic Law Department of FH UGM was led by the Head of the Islamic Law Department, Prof. Dr. Hartini, S.H., M.Si., accompanied by Islamic Law Department lecturers, namely Dr. Muhaimin, S.H., M.Kn., Dr. Yulkarnain Harahab, S.H., M.Si., Dr. Destri Budi Nugraheni, S.H., M.S.I., Dr. Khotibul Umam, S.H., LL.M., and Department Coordinator Assistant, Dita Elvia Kusuma Putri, S.H., M.Kn. The delegation was welcomed directly by the Dean of FH USK, Prof. Dr. Ilyas, S.H., M.Hum., along with the leadership team of the Faculty of Law of Syiah Kuala University, the Heads of the Undergraduate Law Study Program and Master of Notarial Law Program, as well as FH USK lecturers.

This academic benchmarking visit was conducted to gain insights, input, and academic experiences related to the development of curriculum, teaching methods, and the implementation of Islamic Law education. Aceh was selected as the location for the visit due to its distinctive characteristics in implementing Islamic law based on the region’s special autonomy. This condition makes Aceh an important learning environment for understanding the dynamics of the development and implementation of Islamic Law within Indonesia’s national legal system.

During the academic discussion forum, both institutions discussed various strategic issues related to the development of Islamic Law curriculum, innovative teaching methods, and teaching implementation that aligns with legal developments and societal needs. The discussion also covered the dynamics of Islamic law implementation in Aceh, the development of Islamic Law research, and various contemporary legal issues that are currently of concern to academics and legal practitioners.

Through this activity, the Islamic Law Department of FH UGM and FH USK exchanged academic ideas and experiences regarding the development of Islamic Law education. This exchange of perspectives is expected to produce academic recommendations that are beneficial for curriculum development and improving the quality of Islamic Law learning at both FH UGM and FH USK. The activity concluded with a joint documentation session and the presentation of plaques as a symbol of appreciation and commitment between FH UGM and FH USK to continue strengthening academic cooperation in the development of Islamic Law studies in Indonesia.

This academic benchmarking activity supports the achievement of SDG 4 (Quality Education) through strengthening curriculum quality, teaching methods, and the development of Islamic Law education in higher education institutions. Through the exchange of academic ideas and experiences between FH UGM and FH USK, this activity is expected to encourage improvements in learning quality, the development of Islamic Law curricula that are adaptive to legal developments and societal needs, and the strengthening of higher education institutions’ capacity to produce excellent and competitive graduates.
