FH UGM’s Department of Islamic Law and Banda Aceh Syar’iyah Court Strengthen Collaboration in the Implementation of Islamic Law through Comparative Study and Cooperation Agreement

Banda Aceh, June 4, 2026 — The Department of Islamic Law, Faculty of Law, Universitas Gadjah Mada (FH UGM), conducted a comparative study entitled Human Resource Development in Improving Literacy on the Implementation of Islamic Law at the Banda Aceh Syar’iyah Court. The comparative study was led by the Head of the Department of Islamic Law FH UGM, Prof. Dr. Hartini, S.H., M.Si., and was directly welcomed by Dr. Amir Khalis, Chairperson of the Banda Aceh Syar’iyah Court, along with the court’s leadership and officials. This activity was part of an effort to strengthen synergy between academic institutions and judicial institutions in developing Islamic law and enhancing understanding of the distinctive practices of the sharia judicial system in Aceh.

The activity began with an institutional visit and academic discussion forum focusing on the implementation of Islamic law in Aceh, including judicial practices in the fields of Islamic family law, muamalah (Islamic transactions), and Islamic criminal law (jinayah). Through this forum, lecturers from the Department of Islamic Law FH UGM gained a more comprehensive understanding of the special jurisdiction of the Syar’iyah Court within the national judicial system, as well as the implementation of Aceh Qanun in judicial practice. This comparative study also served as a platform for exchanging ideas between academics and judicial practitioners to enrich perspectives in the development of Islamic legal education. The outcomes of the discussion are expected to strengthen the learning process, particularly for courses in Islamic Law, Islamic Criminal Law, and the Legal Skills Laboratory Practice (PLKH) for Religious Courts at FH UGM.

As part of the series of activities, the Faculty of Law Universitas Gadjah Mada and the Banda Aceh Syar’iyah Court signed a Cooperation Agreement (PKS) concerning the Implementation of Cooperation in the Field of the Tri Dharma of Higher Education. Through this cooperation, both institutions are committed to strengthening the development of Islamic legal education and research based on judicial practices, including by providing opportunities to utilize data and decisions from the Syar’iyah Court as learning and research resources relevant to contemporary Islamic legal developments. In addition, this cooperation enables the implementation of guest lectures, research activities, and other academic programs that can broaden students’ perspectives and strengthen the connection between theory and the practice of sharia adjudication.

This comparative study and cooperation initiative contribute to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 4 (Quality Education) through improving learning quality, developing practice-based curricula, and strengthening academic capacity. The activity also contributes to SDG 16 (Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions) through strengthening judicial institutions and developing legal research, as well as SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals) through strategic partnerships between higher education institutions and judicial bodies to generate innovation, strengthen institutional capacity, and support the sustainable implementation of the Tri Dharma of Higher Education.
