Taufik Basari, Member of the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR RI) for the 2019-2024 Period, Serves as a Speaker at a Guest Lecture at the Faculty of Law, Gadjah Mada University (UGM). He Discusses Law and Politics from a Multidisciplinary Perspective

The Master of Law Program at Gadjah Mada University (UGM) held a guest lecture in the Auditorium of Building B, Faculty of Law, on Friday (10/11/2024). The theme of the guest lecture was "Law and Politics from a Multidisciplinary Perspective," with Taufik Basari, S.H., S.Hum., LL.M. as the speaker. Taufik Basari, a member of the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR RI) for the 2019-2024 period, provided relevant insights into the discussion of law and politics from a policymaker's perspective.

The guest lecture was attended by approximately 100 students from the MIH program, taking the Law and Politics (regular) and Law and Politics (LLM) courses. The guest lecture was moderated by Sri Wiyanti Eddyono, S.H., LL.M. (HR), Ph.D.

In the guest lecture, Taufik Basari explained the current state of law in Indonesia, demonstrating that the law taught in law schools often differs from the reality. He emphasized that law is not always ideal and is influenced by political interests in its enforcement and creation. He also discussed the concept of Critical Legal Studies, which critiques the notion that law, in reality, depends on who makes it. Taufik Basari also explained the law-making process in Indonesia, including the stages, considerations, and efforts to create just laws for society, especially for vulnerable and marginalized groups. He encouraged students to be critical in supporting just lawmaking.

The guest lecture continued with a discussion session, in which nine students raised critical questions related to the material presented. Ms. Sri Wiyanti Eddyono concluded the guest lecture by concluding that law and politics in Indonesia are interconnected and often at odds with the needs of the community. Creating just laws requires collaboration between society and political parties, as well as solid political action.

This guest lecture activity reflects the commitment of the Master of Law Study Program, Faculty of Law, UGM and all students in improving the quality of education, in line with point 4 of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), namely improving the quality of the learning process and thesis preparation which is expected to provide a broader contribution to society. Through this guest lecture, it is hoped that the MIH program will also contribute to the achievement of SDGs point 16, namely strengthening an inclusive and peaceful society for sustainable development, providing access to justice for all, and building effective, accountable, and inclusive institutions at all levels through the process of making laws and political products in Indonesia.
