Two 2020 students from the Faculty of Law at Gadjah Mada University, Alfatania Sekar Ismaya and Raihan Khrisna Amalia, have successfully received full scholarships for the Erasmus+ International Credit Mobility Grant (Erasmus+ ICM Grant) program from September 2024 to January 2025 at Leiden University, the Netherlands. This program is a collaboration between the Van Vollenhoven Institute for Law, Leiden University (VVI Leiden) and the Center for Law and Social Justice, Faculty of Law, Gadjah Mada University (LSJ FH UGM). Through this Erasmus+ ICM Grant, Alfatania and Raihan have the opportunity to participate in a six-month student exchange and research program at the Faculty of Law at Leiden University.
During their research and study in the Netherlands, they have ample opportunity to explore socio-legal studies and broaden their knowledge of the legal dynamics between the global north and the global south, supported by professors, lecturers, and fellow students at VVI Leiden. This socio-legal approach is an effort to further explore and delve into a problem, not simply by studying related norms or legal doctrines, but also by examining the comprehensive context of these norms and their application. Furthermore, both students have the opportunity to experience a new life as international students in the Netherlands. They have the chance to learn and familiarize themselves with the learning culture, social order, climate, and even the variety of foods that differ from those in Indonesia.
Through this program, LSJ FH UGM and VVI Leiden aim to strengthen relations and provide the broadest possible opportunities for the development of legal education in Indonesia. Specifically, upon closer examination, the socio-legal research approach is a topic that has been limitedly explored in Indonesia, but is already well-developed at several Dutch universities. This approach is introduced to students in a special way, providing a space to study the interaction between law, governance, and society, a key topic taught by academics at VVI Leiden. Furthermore, they are provided with access to the Leiden Law Faculty Library's extensive special collections related to Indonesian studies.
