Discussing the Importance of Democratic Processes Within Political Parties, the Faculty of Law, Gadjah Mada University (UGM) and the Ministry of Law and Human Rights Hold a Studium Generale

The existence of political parties (parpol) as institutions in democracy serves to bridge various interests among citizens and between citizens and state institutions. In this regard, internal democracy within political parties is a prerequisite that must be implemented to realize the spirit of democracy at the national level.

The Dean of the Faculty of Law, Gadjah Mada University (UGM), Dahliana Hasan, S.H., M. Tax., Ph.D., explained that the democratization process within political parties is a key pillar of a country's democratic political system. Therefore, one effort to build and strengthen democracy in the reform era is to improve and perfect the internal democratic functions of political parties.

"When governance is inadequate, improvements are needed that can ensure democracy is maintained, upheld, and its dignity is maintained," said the Dean in his remarks at the Studium Generale event entitled "Reconstruction of Governance and Strengthening the Function of Political Parties for Indonesian Democracy" on Wednesday (10/16/2024).

In an effort to improve the internal functions of political parties, Dahliana Hasan explained that academics also have a role in providing opinions and input regarding the current internal conditions of political parties. This input can be used by the government to consider future policymaking regarding the regulation of political party functions.

"This is where our collective task lies—not only the Directorate General of General Legal Administration [AHU], but also our collective task as academics—to provide good, constructive, and constructive ideas and opinions to maintain the dignity of democracy," he explained in the Auditorium of the Faculty of Law, Gadjah Mada University (UGM).

Meanwhile, the Director of State Administration at the Directorate General of General Legal Administration, Ministry of Law and Human Rights (Ditjen AHU Kemenkumham), Dr. Baroto, S.H., M.H., explained that his office hopes to receive extensive input from academics regarding current political party issues. This will allow him to produce strategic formulations.

The UGM Faculty of Law alumnus also stated that political parties, once legal entities, hold a crucial position, possessing numerous functions and extraordinary influence. Therefore, he hopes to receive input from academics regarding the regulation of healthy and democratic party functions.

"We hope that you, your colleagues, and I can discuss what constitutes a healthy profile for a party with such numerous functions and extraordinary influence," said Baroto.

This event was an official forum featuring three key speakers: the Director of State Administration, Directorate General of General Legal Administration, Ministry of Law and Human Rights (Ditjen AHU Kemenkumham), Dr. Baroto, S.H., M.H.; the Dean of the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences, UGM, Wawan Mas'udi, Ph.D.; and a lecturer in the Department of Constitutional Law, Faculty of Law, UGM, Dr. Mahaarum Kusuma Pertiwi S.H., M.A., M.Phil.

The Studium General, held by the Ministry of Law and Human Rights and the Faculty of Law, Gadjah Mada University (UGM), was also attended by representatives from the Directorate General of General Legal Administration and the Regional Office of the Ministry of Law and Human Rights, academics, and students from the Faculty of Law and the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences.
