DIES NATALIS 78: Seminar and Book Discussion "Anti-SLAPP Policy and Environmental Management"

As part of the Faculty of Law's 78th Dies Natalis celebrations, a seminar and book discussion was held on Friday, January 26, 2024, centered on Anti-SLAPP Policy and Environmental Management, authored by Dr. Nani Indrawati, S.H., M.Hum., a Justice of the Civil Chamber of the Supreme Court of the Republic of Indonesia (Hakim Agung Kamar Perdata Mahkamah Agung RI). The event reflects SDG 15 on Life on Land and SDG 16 on Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions.

The event drew participants from well beyond the Faculty of Law itself, including representatives from the Environmental Impact Management and Control Agency (P3KLH DLHK DIY), the Regional Office of the Ministry of Law and Human Rights of the Yogyakarta Special Region (Kanwil Kemenkumham DIY), the Indonesian Health Law Society of the Yogyakarta Special Region (Masyarakat Hukum Kesehatan Indonesia DIY), the Yogyakarta Special Region High Prosecutor's Office (Kejaksaan Tinggi DIY), the Yogyakarta Administrative Court (PTUN Yogyakarta), the Yogyakarta Special Region High Court (Pengadilan Tinggi DIY), the Indonesian Notaries Association (Ikatan Notaris Indonesia/INI) of the Yogyakarta Special Region, and disability NGO practitioners (SAPDA).

The discussion was moderated by Umar Mubdi, S.H., M.A., a lecturer in the Department of Civil Law. Dr. Nani Indrawati presented as the author, and was joined by discussants Dr. Totok Dwi Diantoro, S.H., M.A., LL.M., a lecturer in the Department of Environmental Law at the UGM Faculty of Law, and Reynaldo G. Sembiring, S.H., M.H., Executive Director of the Indonesian Center for Environmental Law (ICEL).

According to Dr. Nani, the book examines the ratio legis of Anti-SLAPP provisions in Indonesian environmental law, and explores how the Anti-SLAPP principle has been applied by courts in other countries and by judges in Indonesia. Anti-SLAPP (Strategic Lawsuit Against Public Participation) refers to legal provisions that protect individuals who advocate for the public interest as recognized under the Constitution and existing legislation.
