Open Senate Session, Academic Oration, and UGM Law School Award at FH UGM's 80th Anniversary: Dean Reports on Faculty Achievements in 2025

The Faculty of Law at Universitas Gadjah Mada (FH UGM) held its Open Senate Session, Academic Oration, and UGM Law School Award in commemoration of its 80th Dies Natalis on Friday, February 13, 2026, at the Auditorium of Building B. Held under the theme "The Constitution for the People: Dismantling Structural Injustice and Realizing Agrarian Justice", the occasion reaffirmed the faculty's commitment to strengthening the role of law as an instrument of social justice.

In her annual report, Dean of FH UGM, Dahliana Hasan, S.H., M.Tax., Ph.D., presented the faculty's achievements in 2025 across three main areas: Academic Affairs, Student Affairs, and Partnerships; Finance, Assets, and Human Resources; and Research, Community Service, and Information Systems.

On the academic front, FH UGM continued to demonstrate quality and global competitiveness. Three programs — the Undergraduate Law Program, the Master of Laws, and the Doctoral Program in Legal Studies — received international accreditation from FIBAA. Nationally, five programs were accredited "Unggul" (Excellent), two received "A" ratings, and one was rated "Baik Sekali" (Very Good). In global rankings, FH UGM maintained its position in the 201–250 band in the QS World University Rankings and in the 201–250 band in the Times Higher Education rankings — where it also held the number one position nationally.

Student enrollment figures showed significant growth. In 2025, new student intake reached 1,009 — up from 948 in 2024. Postgraduate enrollment rose from 542 to 583 students, exceeding the university target by 57.8%. Throughout 2025, FH UGM conferred degrees on 401 undergraduate and 423 postgraduate graduates.

Internationalization efforts were further strengthened through student exchange and double degree programs with partner universities including Leiden University, the University of Groningen, the University of Melbourne, and Maastricht University. In addition, 32 students participated in the MBKM (Kampus Merdeka) program through internship placements at various institutions. During the year, 214 partnerships were recorded with 97 active partners from Indonesia and abroad.

On the financial side, FH UGM's total income in 2025 reached Rp92.5 billion — an increase of 7.9% compared to the previous year. This growth was supported by tuition income as well as a range of other sources including cooperative programs and DIPA funds. Infrastructure development included the construction of a connecting corridor, lecture hall renovations, the installation of a videotron, procurement of a centralized server, and strengthening of the faculty's network and digital systems.

In terms of human resource development, FH UGM has 101 lecturers, with one new lecturer joining in 2025. Three lecturers were promoted to full Professor, and 17 are currently pursuing doctoral studies. In research, the faculty distributed 266 research grants and provided 180 publication incentives. A landmark achievement was the indexing of the Mimbar Hukum journal in Scopus, effective January 1, 2026.

Following the Dean's report, the event continued with the academic oration by Ward Berenschot of the University of Amsterdam. He drew attention to the persistence of colonial legal heritage within Indonesia's legal system — particularly in the context of agrarian conflicts between palm oil companies and rural communities.

The event concluded with the UGM Law School Award in three categories. The Alumni Kontributif (Outstanding Alumni) award was presented to Prof. Dr. Otto Hasibuan, S.H., M.M.; the Tokoh Pelopor Berkelanjutan (Sustainable Pioneer) award went to Aat Rahmawati, S.P.; and the Tokoh Pejuang Keadilan (Champion of Justice) award was presented to Vincen Kwipalo. The 80th Dies Natalis served as both a moment of reflection and a reaffirmation of FH UGM's commitment to realizing a law that stands on the side of the people and serves social justice. It also affirmed the faculty's commitment to strengthening the role of law as an instrument of social justice in alignment with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) — in particular SDG 4 (Quality Education), SDG 10 (Reduced Inequalities), SDG 16 (Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions), and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals).
