Prof. Dr. Heribertus Jaka Triyana Was Installed as a Full Professor of International Human Rights Law, Emphasizing the Importance of Protecting Human Rights at Sea

Gadjah Mada University (UGM) has once again expanded its roster of distinguished academics with the installation of Prof. Dr. Heribertus Jaka Triyana, S.H., L.L.M., M.A. as a Full Professor in the field of International Human Rights Law on Monday (October 14, 2025) at the UGM Balairung.

In his inaugural address titled “Indonesia’s Challenges Regarding Armed Conflicts at Sea,” Prof. Jaka highlighted the urgency of strengthening national and international legal frameworks to address the complexities of global maritime conflicts. He emphasized that Indonesia’s maritime policy must prioritize the protection of human rights and the preservation of the marine environment as key pillars in safeguarding sovereignty and peace in its waters.

UGM Rector, Prof. dr. Ova Emilia, M.Med.Ed., Sp.OG(K)., Ph.D., noted in her remarks that this appointment marks an important step for UGM in strengthening its academic contributions in the field of international law, particularly regarding human rights and sustainable maritime law.

Currently, Prof. Jaka serves as Vice Dean for Research, Community Service, and Information Systems at the UGM Faculty of Law, and was officially appointed following the issuance of Decision No. 3495/M/KPT.KP/2025 by the Minister of Higher Education, Science, and Technology. The inauguration ceremony was attended by colleagues, faculty members, students, and alumni of the UGM Faculty of Law, who expressed their appreciation for this outstanding achievement.

Prof. Jaka’s work and ideas are also aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). His advocacy for strengthening the law and protecting marine resources reflects a commitment to SDG 14 (Life Below Water) through efforts to preserve sustainable maritime ecosystems; SDG 16 (Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions) by upholding the principles of justice and the rule of law in the resolution of maritime disputes; and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals) through cross-national collaboration in maritime legal diplomacy.

With his appointment as a full professor, Prof. Jaka Triyana is expected to continue strengthening Indonesia’s role in building a peaceful and just international maritime legal order that upholds human rights and environmental sustainability.
