The Master’s Program in Business and Public Law (MHBK) at the Faculty of Law, Gadjah Mada University (FH UGM), hosted a lecture by an international guest lecturer, this time focusing on intellectual property protection in a global context. The guest lecture, titled “TRIPs Agreement, Intellectual Property Protection in Australia and Selected Jurisdictions,” was held in Room 3.1.1 of the UGM Faculty of Law on Friday, September 19, 2025, from 1:15 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. WIB.
The event featured a single speaker, Professor David Price, a full professor at Charles Darwin University in Australia, who is widely recognized as an expert in the fields of intellectual property law and international law. The lecture was moderated by Dina W. Kariodimedjo, Ph.D., an instructor for the course “Intellectual Property Rights in a Global Perspective” and a faculty member in the Department of Business Law at UGM’s Faculty of Law.
During this session, Professor Price provided an in-depth discussion of the WTO’s TRIPS (Trade-Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights) Agreement and its implementation within the Australian legal system and in several other jurisdictions, such as the Middle East. The main focus of the discussion covered intellectual property rights regulations under TRIPS and their implementation in Australia, including an analysis of the Tobacco Plain Packaging case in Australia from a trademark law perspective. Prof. Price also discussed the dynamics of intellectual property protection in the context of globalization and digitalization, which necessitate strengthening legal capacity in various countries.
This lecture is designed to provide students, faculty, and legal practitioners with a comprehensive understanding of the vital role of intellectual property protection in the global business and innovation ecosystem. Additionally, this event is part of the internationalization efforts of the MHBK Program at the Faculty of Law, UGM, and the strengthening of its global academic network.
This guest lecture was open to the public, and students enrolled in the course “Intellectual Property Rights from a Global Perspective” were required to attend in person. The participants’ enthusiasm was evident in the active discussion and the critical questions they posed to the speaker.
In the context of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), this series of lectures by international guest lecturers contributes to SDG 4 (Quality Education) by providing UGM law students with access to global learning opportunities and international perspectives, while also strengthening their cross-border legal analysis skills. Furthermore, this event also supports SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure) because the protection of intellectual property is a crucial element in driving innovation and knowledge-based economic growth. Discussions regarding the implementation of the TRIPS Agreement and international regulations in the field of intellectual property underscored the importance of the role of law in maintaining a balance between creators’ exclusive rights and the public interest to advance sustainable innovation. Furthermore, this lecture also supports SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals) through academic collaboration between the UGM Faculty of Law and Charles Darwin University, which serves as a concrete manifestation of strengthening global academic networks to develop international legal education that is adaptable to the challenges of the digital age .
