A delegation from the Faculty of Law, Universitas Gadjah Mada, has once again earned distinction at the Parahyangan Legal Competition 2020, held from February 28 to March 1, 2020. This time, FH UGM -- represented by Team Theys Eluay -- claimed First Place in the Scientific Paper Competition (LKTI) and brought home the Prof. Mr. Soediman Kartohadipodjo Rotating Trophy.
The Parahyangan Legal Competition is the largest annual event organized by the Faculty of Law, Universitas Katolik Parahyangan. The competition series comprises a high school debate competition, a university debate competition, and a university scientific paper competition. This year's overarching theme was "Law Enforcement and Human Rights Based on the Legal Ideals of Pancasila," with various related sub-themes. The sub-theme chosen by Team Theys Eluay for their scientific paper was "Social Justice in Oil and Gas Agreements."
Over four months, Team Theys Eluay -- comprising Kerin Dharmawan (FH UGM 2017) and Pricillia Putri (FH UGM 2017) -- conducted extensive research, gathering, reading, analyzing, and drawing conclusions from a wide range of literature. The team also conducted field research, interviewing Miftah Adhi Ikhsanto, a member of the Technical Team for the Draft Special Regional Regulation of West Papua Province on Oil and Gas Revenue Sharing, as well as researchers at the Papua Task Force's Centre for Capacity Development and Partnerships (PPKK) at the UGM Faculty of Law, and a research lecturer from the UGM Centre for Energy Studies. These interviews helped support the content of their scientific paper, titled "Dual Legal Framework on the Protection and Fulfillment of Indigenous People's Rights: Actualizing Social Justice in Upstream Oil and Gas Business Activities in West Papua Province." Throughout their research, the team received guidance and direction from UGM Faculty of Law lecturers -- in particular their supervisor, Sartika Intaning Pradhani, as well as Ananda Prima Yurista and Tody Sasmitha Jiwa Utama.
