UGM Faculty of Law Library Develops Inclusive Services to Advance Sustainable Access to Knowledge

The Faculty of Law Library at Universitas Gadjah Mada (FH UGM) has reaffirmed its role as a socially inclusive specialist library by developing a range of services, programs, and spaces oriented toward collaboration, empowerment, and open access for all members of the academic community and the wider public.

As a component of a higher education institution, the FH UGM Library functions not only as a centre of legal information, but also as a space for interaction and learning that encourages active user participation. Through a social inclusion approach, the library is committed to ensuring that every individual — regardless of social, economic, or academic background — has an equal opportunity to access, understand, and make use of legal knowledge.

The library is no longer simply a place to read or find references — it has grown into a space to grow together, share ideas, and build legal awareness across society. In addition, the Digital Law Library service enables online access to legal resources, making the collection available to students with disabilities and to members of the public outside the campus. This initiative is in keeping with UGM's mission as a people's university that plays an active role in promoting equal access to education and social justice across Indonesia.

The FH UGM Library has also actively pursued collaborations with a range of external partners. To date, it has hosted visits from secondary schools and prospective UGM students, and has established working relationships with HukumOnline, the National Law Development Agency (Badan Pembinaan Hukum Nasional/BPHN) of the Ministry of Law and Human Rights, and DEMA FH UGM. The library has also supported student-led initiatives through collaboration with UGM Community Service and Learning (KKN) groups in conducting book donation drives for the community.

These developments in inclusive, socially-oriented library services align with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) — particularly SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities). By providing a space that is open, inclusive, and accessible to all, the FH UGM Library contributes to creating an inclusive, empowered, and sustainable campus environment, while strengthening knowledge networks that deliver tangible benefits to society.

Grounded in the values of openness and inclusivity, the FH UGM Library is committed to becoming a model modern academic library — one that not only meets information needs but also helps cultivate a society that is legally aware, broadly knowledgeable, and empowered to face the challenges of the future.
