The Legal Consultation and Assistance Centre (PKBH) at the UGM Faculty of Law, in collaboration with Cebongan Correctional Facility (Lapas Cebongan), held its first inmate development activity of the year in the form of a legal outreach session on Friday, February 3, 2023. The session was attended by 28 inmates and featured two resource persons from the UGM Faculty of Law: Dr. Sigid Riyanto, S.H., M.Si. and Dr. Hariyanto, S.H., M.Kn.
In the first session, Mr. Hariyanto delivered a presentation on Indonesian Law and Criminal Law. Through this topic, inmates gained an understanding of how law functions as a form of social control, protects interests, and regulates conduct within society. At its core, law is a set of rules created to foster harmonious conditions within a community.
The second session, delivered by Mr. Sigid, addressed the criminal offenses set out in Articles 351 and 170 of the Penal Code (KUHP) concerning destruction of property and assault. This segment explained how a given event can satisfy the elements of a criminal offense, and what sentence may be imposed. A criminal offense, it was explained, must satisfy several essential elements before it can be properly classified as such -- including an unlawful act, fault, and supporting evidence.
During the closing Q&A session, many participants raised questions about real-life cases they had experienced or encountered within the community -- ranging from cases of vehicle embezzlement, to breach of contract, and more.
