Legal Outreach in Candirejo Discusses Illegal Logging and Mining, Encourages Community Participation

The "Suluh Praja" Legal Outreach at the Candirejo Village Hall, Semanu District, Gunung Kidul, was successfully held on Thursday (5/9/24). This outreach was a collaboration between the Faculty of Law at Gadjah Mada University (UGM) through the Center for Legal Aid Consultation (PKBH) and the High Prosecutor's Office of Yogyakarta (DIY). The event aimed to provide legal insight and knowledge to participants, including local village officials and surrounding community members, on common legal issues.

This time, Suluh Praja raised the theme "Understanding Illegal Logging and Mining, and Community Participation in Combating Illegal Mining." The theme was chosen to offer legal perspectives on these issues and to encourage community participation in fighting illegal mining activities.

The legal outreach began with a welcome speech from a representative of Candirejo Village. Next, Nurhadi, S.H., M.H. from the DIY Prosecutor's Office provided an introduction and presented material on the duties, roles, and functions of the civil and administrative law division of the Indonesian Prosecutor's Office.

The main materials were delivered by two lecturers from UGM's Faculty of Law. The first speaker, Dr. Wahyu Yun Santoso, S.H., M.Hum., LL.M., presented the topic "Illegal Logging and Mining." Dr. Wahyu, a lecturer in the Department of Environmental Law, shared insights on the legal aspects and environmental impacts of illegal logging and mining. The second speaker, Dr. Sartika Intaning Pradhani, S.H., M.H., covered the topic "Community Participation in Combating Illegal Mining." This topic aimed to provide participants with knowledge on the role and involvement of the community in addressing illegal mining issues.

Throughout the presentations, Dr. Wahyu Yun and Dr. Sartika frequently interacted with the participants, fostering a lively discussion between both parties. The speakers also addressed participants' questions with clarity and solutions.

This legal outreach is expected to serve as an effort to strengthen inclusive and peaceful communities while supporting the achievement of SDG Goal 1, to help eradicate poverty, and SDG Goal 16, to promote peace, justice, and strong institutions, starting from the village level.
