In late September, the Department of Islamic Law held its 9th Legal Outreach session, on the theme "Estate Property and Issues in Its Distribution in Practice." The speakers were Dr. Yulkarnain Harahab, S.H., M.Si. (lecturer, Department of Islamic Law, FH UGM) and Drs. Arif Irfan, S.H., M.Hum. (Judge, Sleman Religious Court).
Following the previous month's session on "Elements of Islamic Inheritance and Related Issues,"the speakers this time went deeper into one specific element: estate property. According to Yulkarnain, estate property refers to everything left behind by a deceased person, including both physical assets they owned and their legal rights/entitlements. However, he noted an important nuance: this property cannot yet be distributed to heirs as-is, since it must first be reduced by various costs — such as hospital expenses (if any), funeral/burial arrangements, fulfillment of any will, and repayment of debts.
As a legal practitioner, Arif Irfan then discussed real-world issues that arise regarding estate property — including questions of legal subjects (who is entitled), legal objects (what counts as estate property), and the ongoing evolution of relevant legislation. Participants and speakers also engaged in further discussion during a Q&A session, with many attendees raising questions tied to problems they were personally dealing with.
By the end of the year, the Department of Islamic Law planned to hold three more legal outreach sessions, continuing its collaborative Legal Outreach series with the Sleman Religious Court.
