Datun Suluh Praja Legal Outreach at Banaran Village

Banaran, Kulon Progo, Wednesday, June 14, 2023 - Banaran became the third village visited by the organizing team behind the Datun Suluh Praja Legal Outreach, a collaboration between the UGM Faculty of Law and Kejati DIY. This edition's theme was Solutions Relating to the Use and Conversion of Village Cash Land Under the Authority of Other Parties. To address this theme, the Faculty brought in two expert resource persons: Dr. Jur. Any Andjarwati, M.Jur., S.H., a lecturer in the Department of Agrarian Law, and Dr. Sulastriyono, S.H., M.Si., a lecturer in the Department of Customary Law.

Following a brief presentation by the resource persons and Kejati DIY on the duties and authority of Kejati's Civil and State Administrative Division, this session was structured to allow more extensive interactive Q&A between the resource persons and participants. In keeping with the theme, participants -- comprising village officials -- raised numerous questions about village rights over land facing various problems, ranging from village land overlapping with privately certified land (SHM), to abandoned former riverbeds left behind by mining activity, to the proposed conversion of customary irrigation land.

This Datun Suluh Praja Legal Outreach session is hoped to serve as a first step toward finding effective solutions for the use and conversion of village cash land. With a stronger understanding of the relevant laws and regulations among village officials, combined with active community participation, it is hoped that issues relating to land use and conversion can be resolved more effectively.
