Exploring Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) in the National Banking Sector: UGM’s Faculty of Law Notary Program Invites Students to Attend a Lecture with Experts

The Master’s Program in Notarial Law at the Faculty of Law, UGM, successfully held a Guest Lecture on Banking Law titled Environmental, Social & Governance (ESG) in National Banking (Regulations and Practices)”. The event was held on Thursday (May 22, 2025) at 1:00 PM WIB, attended by approximately 70 students in person in Room III.1.1 of the UGM Faculty of Law and online via Zoom Cloud Meeting.

This guest lecture is part of the curriculum for students taking the Banking Law course in the Notary Master’s Program at the Faculty of Law, UGM. The lecture featured guest speaker Rima Dwi Permatasari, Group Head of Environmental, Social & Governance (ESG) at PT Bank Syariah Indonesia Tbk (BSI), who discussed ESG regulations and practices in the national banking sector. The discussion was lively and moderated by Dr. Khotibul Umam, S.H., LL.M., a lecturer from the Department of Islamic Law at the Faculty of Law, UGM, who also teaches the Banking Law course in the Master of Notary Studies program at the Faculty of Law, UGM.

During the presentation session, the speaker noted that global climate change has garnered international attention, notably through the adoption of the Paris Agreement in 2015. This was subsequently responded to by various countries, including Indonesia, through various national commitments, namely the enactment of various laws and regulations regarding sustainable finance, one of which was the ratification of the Paris Agreement into Law No. 16 of 2016. These commitments regarding sustainable finance were then concretely implemented by BSI through various commitments and policies that are also oriented toward sustainable development goals (SDGs). This is carried out through a series of mechanisms, each of which includes sustainable banking, sustainable operations , and sustainability beyond banking. Every year, BSI actively evaluates and updates these financial sustainability commitments to ensure they function optimally and continue to achieve their objectives.

The students’ enthusiasm was evident from the wide range of questions they asked during the discussion session. The speakers answered each question in a comprehensive and practical manner, providing a deeper understanding of ESG within the context of Indonesian banking law.

This initiative is closely linked to several SDGs, including SDG 13: Climate Action, through the banking sector’s role in promoting green financing and environmentally friendly investments; SDG 12: Responsible Consumption and Production, through the application of social and environmental responsibility principles in banking activities; and SDG 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth, by promoting inclusive and sustainable economic growth through ESG principles. In addition, this seminar also supports SDG 16: Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions by emphasizing the importance of transparent, accountable, and ethical governance in national financial and banking practices.

By inviting experienced practitioners, the Master’s Program in Notarial Law at the Faculty of Law, UGM, aims to equip students with in-depth knowledge of ESG practices and regulations, which are becoming increasingly important in the modern banking sector.
