The Faculty of Law at Universitas Gadjah Mada reaffirmed its commitment to the Sustainable Development Goals during the Pionir Justicia orientation program, which ran from Monday, July 29, to Saturday, August 3, 2024.
Specifically, the faculty took concrete steps to reduce plastic waste throughout the event. All Justicia Muda were encouraged to bring their own personal tumblers (reusable water bottles) for the duration of the orientation a measure aimed at cutting down on single-use plastic bottles. The Faculty of Law has also installed drinking fountains on campus to make it easy for students to refill throughout the day.
On the fifth day of orientation, food was served in lunch boxes brought by students themselves, reducing the use of disposable cardboard and plastic food packaging. Through this initiative, the Faculty of Law hopes to instill in its new students an early awareness of the importance of waste reduction and responsible consumption in support of SDG 12 on Responsible Consumption and Production.
This initiative is part of the Faculty of Law UGM's broader commitment to educating students to become not only academically excellent, but also socially and environmentally responsible. The faculty wants students to understand that environmental responsibility begins with small everyday actions, like reducing waste through tumblers and lunch boxes. This is a tangible step by the Faculty of Law UGM in supporting the SDGs.
The initiative was met with a positive response from the Justicia Muda, who recognized the importance of their role in protecting the environment. Through concrete steps like these, the Faculty of Law UGM hopes to continue contributing to the global effort to achieve sustainable development.
