Yogyakarta Special Region (DIY) have a big potential in the intellectual property field that is expected to push regional economic development. But in reality, the intellectual property infringement often happens, especially in the form of counterfeit goods in both department store and in e-commerce platforms. As a response towards this concern, Ministry of Law and Human Rights Yogyakarta Regional Office held a Mobile IP Clinic at Royal Ambarrukmo Hotel Yogyakarta on 31 July 2024.
This event aimed to educate the consumer, businessman, and law enforcement officers regarding the form of intellectual property protection along with the dispute settlement process in that case. One of the speaker on this event was Laurensia Andrini, S.H., LL.M., Ph.D, lecturer from Business Law Department Faculty of Law UGM. Dr. Andrini explained about the types of intellectual property and the dispute settlement mechanism for the business owners.
In her presentation, Dr. Andrini highlighted the trend of intellectual property infringement in Yogyakarta is not only because of the lack of knowledge from the business owner, but also from the culture of the people that still adapting the communal ownership. This is contradicted with the individuality principle in the intellectual property rights, that often cause the conflict between the local tradition and the modern legal system.
This seminar ended with question and answer session that were enthusiastically anticipated by the participants, especially from the business owners. They asked several related topics such as copyright, license, and royalty, that show the huge necessity on the knowledge on the intellectual property in practice.
This Mobile IP Clinic was expected to be one of the first step in growing the awareness of Yogyakarta people regarding the importance in respecting and protecting intellectual property.
