As part of its 79th anniversary celebrations, the Faculty of Law at Gadjah Mada University (FH UGM) is hosting an academic discussion titled “Private and Public Law in Motion: A Comparative Exploration of Legal Regimes.” The event will be conducted entirely in English and is a collaboration with the University of Windsor, reflecting FH UGM’s commitment to strengthening international academic cooperation.
The event began with a VIP Gala Dinner on Thursday, February 6, 2025, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. WIB (+7 GMT) at Kayu Manis Restaurant, Hotel Tentrem, Yogyakarta. The event aimed to welcome invited guests, strengthen academic networks, and provide an opportunity for informal discussion prior to the main sessions. The following day, on Friday, February 7, 2025, a Focus Group Discussion (FGD) will be held at the Faculty of Law, Gadjah Mada University, Yogyakarta, from 8:00 AM to 1:00 PM WIB (+7 GMT). This discussion will bring together academics, researchers, judges, and legal practitioners to explore the dynamic relationship between private law and public law from a comparative perspective.
This discussion focused on the interaction between private law and public law in a comparative context, highlighting the legal systems in Indonesia, Canada, and the United States. By examining the ever-evolving dynamics of the law, the speakers highlighted various contemporary legal interventions and how the relationship between private and public law continues to evolve from a global perspective.
As part of the series of events, Indonesia hosted the first Focus Group Discussion on Private and Public Comparative Law. This forum brought together legal scholars, researchers, judges, and legal practitioners from Indonesia to explore the dynamic intersection between private and public law. The discussion aimed to foster dialogue on comparative law approaches and to identify challenges, opportunities, and innovations in both legal fields. By examining legal systems, practices, and reforms, participants are expected to gain new insights into contemporary legal challenges through comparative legal analysis.
Some of the key issues discussed in this session included:
- Challenges currently facing the judicial system and the steps that have been taken to address them.
- The balance between public and private interests, particularly in commercial regulation and public protection.
- The responses of various jurisdictions to technological advancements, including artificial intelligence (AI), personal data protection, and automation.
Dr. Dian Rositawati, S.H., M.A., from the Institute for Judicial Independence Research and Advocacy, and Binziad Kadafi, S.H., LL.M., Ph.D., a member of the Judicial Commission of the Republic of Indonesia, provided in-depth perspectives on the Indonesian judicial system. Prof. Dr. Drs. Paripurna P. Sugarda, S.H., M.Hum., LL.M., a professor in the Department of Business Law at the Faculty of Law, UGM, also contributed an academic analysis of comparative law across various jurisdictions. From the international arena, Dr. Shanthi Elizabeth Jegatheeswaran, Associate Professor of Law at the University of Windsor, and Deepti Panda, a Ph.D. candidate at Queen’s University in Canada, highlighted legal aspects in North America. Meanwhile, Judge Aliyah Shaheedah Sabree, Chief Judge Pro Tem of the 36th District Court of Michigan, provided practical insights into the application of law in the United States.
Speakers from diverse academic and legal practice backgrounds were encouraged to actively engage in discussions and share insights to enrich understanding of legal developments across various countries. This event not only served as a platform for the exchange of knowledge but also strengthened global academic networks and fostered collaborative learning among nations.
Through forums such as this, the UGM Faculty of Law continues to demonstrate its role as a globally oriented legal education institution that is prepared to face future legal challenges on an international scale.
