UGM's Master of Law Program and Hukumonline Hold Workshop on the Importance of Producing Original and Plagiarism-Free Writing

The UGM Master of Law Program (Jakarta Campus), in collaboration with Hukumonline, held a Workshop on the Use of AI and Plagiarism in Academics, titled "AI Yes, Plagiarism No! Let My Work Lights Up!" on Saturday, October 19, 2024.

This hybrid workshop aimed to improve students' ability to write final assignments with a plagiarism rate of no more than 19%. It also provided education and awareness among the academic community about the importance of producing original, plagiarism-free written work.

The event began at 1:30 PM WIB with remarks from the Study Program Secretary and moderator, Dr. Agustina Merdekawati, S.H., LL.M., and presented the first session with Ibrahim Hanif, S.H., LL.M., Ph.D. (Cand), a lecturer in International Law at the Faculty of Law, UGM. Session 2 was presented by Sinatrya Primandhana, S.H., M.H., Manager of the Legal Research & Analysis Division at Hukumonline, and session 3 was presented by Nova Indah Wijayanti, S.IP., a librarian from Gadjah Mada University (UGM).

The workshop was attended by students from the 45th and 46th batches (Business and Litigation), students in collaborative classes from the Directorate General of Immigration (DITJENIM) and the Witness and Victim Protection Agency (LPSK), as well as active students writing their final papers for semester IV and taking the MPIH course.

In the first session, Hanif explained that being a writer and researcher begins with four stages: starting (initial questions and research direction), searching (relevant sources, summarizing findings/readings, initial information), writing (first draft of non-academic writing), and editing (editing sentences, word choice, and grammar). The next session discussed AI for student learning.

The second session focused on AI regulations in Indonesia: challenges and opportunities. In her presentation, Sina explained that the Ministry of Communication and Information Technology is considering adopting a UN General Assembly Resolution on the safe, secure, and reliable utilization of artificial intelligence systems. Furthermore, the Ministry will refer to the European Union's AI Act.

In the final session, Nova explained the complexity of legal language; legal terms, statutes, and precedents must be used accurately, but the writing must also remain accessible to readers without legal expertise. She also explained structuring legal arguments: building well-organized and persuasive legal arguments is a core aspect of academic writing in the legal field.

Participants actively asked questions during the workshop session and participated in discussions on examples of scientific papers. The speakers provided participants with an understanding of the potential and judicious application of AI technology to support quality academic writing, focused research, and in-depth analysis.
