The Department of Tax Law at the UGM Faculty of Law, in partnership with Universiteit Leiden in the Netherlands, held the Intensive Course on Tax Law (ICTL), themed "A Journey from the Past to the Digital Era." The course ran for five days, from Monday, January 27, to Friday, January 31, 2020.
ICTL 2020 featured four speakers drawn from the academic, practitioner, and government sectors. The academic speakers came from Universiteit Leiden: Prof. dr. ir. Rex Arendsen, a Professor of Tax Law, and Maarten Manse, MA, a historian specializing in taxation. The practitioner and government sectors were represented by Ichwan Sukardi, Managing Partner of Tax at RSM Indonesia, and Defi Lim from the Directorate General of Taxes at the Ministry of Finance.
As a whole, ICTL 2020 explored a range of tax law issues, including: (1) the historical context of tax law and its relationship to state development; (2) several case studies relating to the history of taxation in Indonesia (Aceh, West Sumatra, Java, and Maluku); (3) the organization and implementation of tax administration; (4) the background and structure of the international tax system; and (5) current developments in international taxation and technology. Each daily session also concluded with a case study and group discussion.
ICTL 2020 closed with a Farewell Dinner held at Tembi Rumah Budaya, Yogyakarta. The dinner featured a performance of the traditional Ayun-Ayun dance, followed by a communal meal, certificate distribution, and a sharing of reflections from participants.
