The delegation led by Soedikno Mertokusumo from Gadjah Mada University (UGM) successfully won four awards at the 2024 Semar Law Festival, hosted by Sebelas Maret University (UNS). The competition included a National Essay Competition and a Focus Group Discussion (FGD) on the theme “Challenges in Implementing a Carbon Tax in Indonesia.”
The Soedikno Mertokusumo team, consisting of two students, Muhammad Bintang and Fidela Novanda Pieris, won second place in the National Essay Competition on the theme “Challenges in Implementing a Carbon Tax in Indonesia.” In addition, Fidela Novanda Pieris also received the Best Delegate Award and the Best FGD Award for her group during the Focus Group Discussionsession. Meanwhile, Muhammad Bintang received the Best Speaker Award for his contribution to the FGD presentation.
The carbon tax theme is relevant to several Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), such as SDG 7 (affordable and clean energy), SDG 8 (decent work and economic growth), SDG 9 (sustainable infrastructure), SDG 11 (sustainable cities), SDG 13 (climate action), and SDG 16 (justice and strong institutions). The UGM team offers innovative solutions, such as investments in low-carbon infrastructure and public-private partnerships, to support the implementation of a fair carbon tax policy.
Throughout the preparation and execution of this competition, the Soedikno Mertokusumo team worked with great dedication and strong teamwork. The competition lasted several weeks, with the entire process taking place both online and in person, to discuss key issues related to carbon tax policy in Indonesia.
At the competition’s climax, the Soedikno Mertokusumo team delivered their best performance in the Focus Group Discussion, competing against participants from various universities across Indonesia. This achievement was made possible by hard work, in-depth analysis, and strong teamwork among the members, who were enthusiastically led by Fidela Novanda Pieris and Muhammad Bintang.
More than just an individual achievement, this competition also reflects the success of the Gadjah Mada University delegation, which brought home a total of four trophies from this prestigious event.
With the conclusion of this competition, the Soedikno Mertokusumo team is determined to continue expanding their knowledge and remain open to new ideas, in the hope of achieving similar success in future competitions. This achievement reflects the team’s hard work and UGM’s full support in producing legal policy innovations relevant to global challenges.
