UGM Law School Delegation Wins Second Place in the UNJA Law Fair 2025 National Legal Essay Competition with a Proposal on the Use of Satellite Imagery and Machine Learning

A delegation from Gadjah Mada University has once again achieved outstanding success in the field of legal writing. Two students from the Faculty of Law, Eva Selvia Putri Arlista and Ghefira Mustika Putri, won second place in the National Legal Essay Competition UNJA Law Fair (ULF) 2025. This competition was organized by the Faculty of Law at the University of Jambi (FH UNJA) as a program initiated by the Law Science Organization in collaboration with FH UNJA.

In general, ULF 2025 aims to hone participants’ skills in legal writing, debate, and mock trials, while also broadening their horizons through a series of activities such as talk shows and webinars featuring legal experts. This year, ULF successfully attracted participation from approximately 45 universities across Indonesia, making it one of the most prestigious national-scale legal competitions.

The competition consists of two stages: the document screening round and the final round. The UGM delegation successfully advanced to the final round with the subtheme “The Role of Technology in Natural Resource Management”. This subtheme was chosen in recognition of the immense potential of technological advancements in the current era to support the management of Indonesia’s abundant natural resources. In their paper, the UGM team emphasized the importance of utilizing legal and digital technologies as tangible solutions to address national challenges.

The paper titled “Optimizing Satellite Imagery and Machine Learning (CSML) Mechanisms to Combat Illegal Mining in Indonesia” was the topic presented by the delegation. The paper provides an analysis of the serious impacts of illegal mining practices that remain rampant in Indonesia, ranging from economic losses and environmental damage to weak law enforcement. As a solution, the UGM team proposed the use of satellite imagery technology and machine learning systems to detect illegal mining activities early on, thereby facilitating monitoring, strengthening regulations, and improving the effectiveness of enforcement.

This achievement is also closely aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The UGM delegation’s initiative supports SDG 15 on Terrestrial Ecosystems through efforts to protect the environment from damage caused by illegal mining, as well as SDG 13 on Climate Action by preventing environmental degradation that could exacerbate the climate crisis. Furthermore, the proposed solutions align with SDG 16 on Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions, as they emphasize the importance of law enforcement and more transparent and accountable resource governance. From an educational perspective, this achievement also reflects UGM’s contribution to SDG 4 on Quality Education, by encouraging students to produce innovative research that has a tangible impact on society.

This success not only underscores the academic excellence of UGM Law School students, but also demonstrates how the younger generation can make a tangible contribution to finding sustainable solutions to the nation’s challenges through research, innovation, and the application of technology.
