CAUPLI 2025: BLC FH UGM and CALS NUS Examine a Comparative Study of Indonesian and Singaporean Contract Law

The Business Law Community (BLC) of the Faculty of Law at Gadjah Mada University participated in the Center for Asian Legal Studies – UGM Peer Learning Initiative (CAUPLI) 2025 program, held at the Faculty of Law, National University of Singapore (NUS). This event was the result of an international collaboration between the BLC at the UGM Faculty of Law and the Center for Asian Legal Studies (CALS) at NUS, focusing on a comparative study of Indonesian and Singaporean contract law.

The event took place on Saturday, September 6, 2025, at NUS Law. Peer tutors from the BLC at the UGM Faculty of Law delivered presentations in two main sessions. The first session examined the validity of contracts, their performance, and breach of contract under Indonesian law, while the second session discussed contract termination and relevant legal remedies. These presentations were delivered to NUS students, opening up a productive comparative discussion on the similarities and differences between the legal systems of the two countries.

In addition to the presentation of materials, the forum also featured interactive discussions between UGM Law School students and NUS students. Participants asked critical questions regarding contract enforcement practices in both countries. These discussions not only enriched the participants’ knowledge but also fostered a contextual understanding of how differences in legal systems can influence cross-border business practices. The participation of the UGM Faculty of Law’s BLC in CAUPLI 2025 underscores the importance of international collaboration in legal education. This event not only honed students’ legal research and memorandum-drafting skills but also sharpened their academic presentation skills in an international forum. Through direct engagement at NUS Law, UGM students gained valuable experience interacting with the global academic community while bringing an Indonesian legal perspective to the international stage.

This event also serves as a platform for the exchange of knowledge and academic experiences, as well as for strengthening institutional networks between the UGM Faculty of Law and NUS. It is also closely aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). CAUPLI 2025 supports SDG 4 (Quality Education) by enhancing students’ research and academic presentation capabilities; SDG 16 (Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions) by promoting a transparent and fair understanding of law across jurisdictions; and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals) by strengthening international collaboration among universities in Asia.
