On Tuesday morning (3/5) at precisely 9:00 a.m. WIB, the Multimedia Room at the Faculty of Law UGM was filled with approximately 70 students who sat attentively and enthusiastically listening to a guest lecturer. The lecturer was none other than Prof. Jon Eddy from the University of Washington, who delivered a lecture on “Transnational Commercial Law.”
Transnational law encompasses national, international, or hybrid legal rules that apply to individuals, businesses, and governments engaged in activities or matters with cross-border implications. Transnational law governs actions or events that transcend national boundaries and involves individuals, companies, states, or other groups, rather than being limited to formal relations between governments.
There are virtually limitless situations that may arise in a transnational context, as legal rules or frameworks govern various aspects of cross-border activities. Since applicable legal rules may conflict with one another, the applicable law is determined through conflict-of-laws rules or private international law. During the lecture, Prof. Jon Eddy provided a more specific discussion of the harmonization of contract and sales law, financial security, insolvency, as well as the aspects that need to be considered from the perspective of norm-making and legal harmonization techniques.
The 90-minute lecture proceeded in an engaging and orderly manner before concluding with several questions from the students. The positive response from the participants encouraged the Faculty of Law UGM to consider inviting guest lecturers more frequently to broaden the academic knowledge and perspectives of its academic community.
