As part of the 70th Dies Natalis celebration of the Faculty of Law at Universitas Gadjah Mada (FH UGM), the Faculty once again hosted the Gadjah Mada Legal Research and Innovation (GALERI) 2016. One of the events in the GALERI 2016 series was a national seminar held on Saturday morning (30/4) in Room III.1.1 of the Faculty of Law UGM.

The national seminar was entitled “Prospects for the Development of Scholarship on the ASEAN Community.” The theme was chosen in response to the disparity in attention given to the three pillars of the ASEAN Community, which has contributed to limited public understanding of ASEAN. Scholarly studies on ASEAN remain relatively limited compared with research on other regional integration organizations, such as the European Union and the African Union. Yet, scholarly studies of ASEAN play an important role in addressing the confusion, uncertainty, and “mysteries” surrounding how this international organization actually carries out its functions and fulfills its objectives.

The seminar featured Prof. Dr. Sigit Riyanto, S.H., LL.M., Professor of International Law at the Faculty of Law UGM and Head of the Center for Security and Peace Studies at UGM; Prof. Tomi Suryo Utomo, S.H., LL.M., Ph.D., Professor at Universitas Janabadra and a member of the Department of Commercial Law at the Faculty of Law UGM; and Dr. Rikardo Simarmata, S.H., Head of the Djojodigoeno Center for Adat Law Studies and a member of the Department of Adat Law at the Faculty of Law UGM. The seminar was moderated by Agustina Merdekawati, S.H., LL.M., Secretary of the Department of International Law at the Faculty of Law UGM.

“We hope that the participants and attendees will not only gain knowledge but also return home inspired to conduct research. This seminar is important for examining Indonesia’s challenges in the era of the ASEAN Economic Community. We must not become a nation that is late to understand what is happening,” said Prof. M. Hawin, S.H., LL.M., Ph.D., in his opening remarks.

Following the opening remarks, the seminar continued with presentations by the speakers. Each speaker was given approximately 25 minutes to deliver their presentation, followed by an open discussion session. The seminar attracted considerable interest, with many participants actively raising questions. Attendees included GALERI 2016 competition participants, members of the academic community from various regions, and students of the Faculty of Law UGM. The seminar concluded with the announcement of the winners of each GALERI 2016 competition category. (Sekar/Jati)
