In commemoration of the first Dies Natalis following the merger of UGM Library and UGM Archives, a series of Database Workshop events was held for faculties within Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM). The Faculty of Law Library participated by collaborating on the Westlaw E-Resources Workshop. This workshop took place pada Kamis (16/05/2024) on Thursday (16/05/2024) at the Faculty of Law Computer Laboratory. The event aimed to support Sustainable Development Goals in Quality Education
The Westlaw E-Resources Workshop menghadirkan featured Farhan Avicenna, B.Com., Managing Director of PT. Ina Publikatama, as the speaker. It was attended by students from the Faculty of Law, including undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral levels, as well as from other faculties. To fully meet students' needs, the workshop was conducted in a hybrid format. A total of 43 students participated offline, and 10 joined online
Westlaw is a premier legal database serving as a digital reference source to facilitate research for the academic community at UGM Faculty of Law. This workshop provided guidance on navigating the Westlaw database as a digital reference tool, with a primary focus on its latest personalized features. Westlaw now offers enhanced personalization through features such as: Folders for saving desired journals, articles, and books; Favorites to mark preferred publications; History, to access previous search records. Additionally, key menus include:
- Primary Law or Cases: Access to primary materials such as case law, statutes, regulations, legislative materials, and more.
- Secondary Sources to Up-to-date information on emerging or familiar legal fields, including encyclopedias, journals, law reviews, and treatises.
- Built-in Citation Tool: A citation feature available across all full-text content.Users benefit from "Copy with Reference," which automatically appears when selecting (highlighting) text in an article, offering various standard citation formats.copy with reference”. Fitur ini muncul secara otomatis ketika pengguna melakukan “block” pada sebagian teks di artikel yang terpilih. Dengan memilih fitur ini, pengguna juga ditawarkan dengan beberapa standard referensi.
- West Key Number System: A case discovery and issue-based research tool that identifies relevan relevant cases quickly by pinpointing legal issues and arguments reflecting sifat hukum the true nature of the law.
- KeyCite: A comprehensive and accurate citator enabling users to swiftly verify whether a case, statute, or other legal authority remains good law.
During the material presentation, Farhan Avicenna nvited participants to ask questions directly. Several attendees enthusiastically inquired about effective and efficient database navigation techniques. The workshop concluded with a quiz to assess participants' understanding of the presented material. Six lucky participants answered correctly and received prizes. Selected participants were given the opportunity to demonstrate their skills live in front of the group.
The database navigation workshop is a regular initiative by the Faculty of Law Library UGM. It is expected to enhance the utilization of e-resources and positively impact the implementation of the three pillars of higher education (tridharma perguruan tinggi) at Universitas Gadjah Mada, thereby supporting quality education.
