UGM Faculty of Law Students Conduct Legal Counseling on Human Trafficking at Stella Duce 1 High School, Yogyakarta

Students from the Faculty of Law at Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM), represented by the Catholic Student Association (KMK) of the Faculty of Law, are working to educate and raise awareness among young people about the dangers of human trafficking, particularly from a legal perspective. To that end, they held a legal counseling session at Stella Duce 1 High School, Yogyakarta, on Thursday (5/9/2024).

A total of 36 students participated in the legal counseling session, which was themed "Exploring the Reality of Crime: Understanding Human Trafficking and Its Threats from a Legal Perspective." The student speakers for this event included Maria Viola Ayu Yomanda (2022), Maria Melina Pentika (2022), Marselina Setiyowati (2022), and Putri Anjani Aprillia (2022). They provided a comprehensive explanation of the concept and practice of human trafficking, offering deep insights into how this crime occurs in society.

The aim of this event was to enhance students' understanding of the threat of human trafficking and the legal relevance in addressing such cases. This counseling was part of a community service initiative to educate and raise awareness among young people about the dangers of human trafficking, with a particular focus on the relevant legal aspects.

The benefits of this activity include providing students with an understanding of the concept and practice of human trafficking, the potential threats, especially to vulnerable groups such as women and children, the legal instruments for enforcement and protection in Indonesia, and how to report human trafficking practices. It is hoped that through this event, the students will not only gain a deep understanding of human trafficking but also become agents of change in their communities, helping to prevent such crimes.

The counseling session focused on the issue of human trafficking, discussing the latest tactics used by perpetrators and how Indonesia's legal system plays a role in preventing and addressing these crimes. During the session, students were provided with information on the legal steps the public can take to report such criminal activities. UGM Faculty of Law students also gave in-depth explanations about how these crimes occur in society and outlined the legal frameworks in Indonesia that protect victims. Through the materials presented, the students were encouraged to recognize the potential threats posed by human trafficking, particularly to vulnerable groups like women and children.

This activity aligns with the goals of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), specifically Goal 8, which focuses on decent work and economic growth, and ensuring that people, especially the younger generation, are protected from criminal practices such as exploitation and human trafficking. The education provided in this session supports global efforts to create an inclusive and fair economy for all by protecting people from exploitation and trafficking.

The event concluded with an interactive question-and-answer session, where students posed critical questions about human trafficking cases and existing legal protections. UGM Faculty of Law students also prepared an interactive quiz related to the materials presented to assess participants' understanding of the issue of human trafficking.
