The 16th Indonesian National Round of the International Humanitarian Law Moot Court Competition 2021

The 16th Indonesian National Round of the International Humanitarian Law Moot Court Competition 2021, organized by the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) in collaboration with the Faculty of Law, Universitas Padjadjaran, was held from July 28 to November 14, 2021. This year’s competition centered on a hypothetical case concerning the criminal responsibility of a military commander who: (1) compelled civilians and prisoners of war to work in support of enemy military operations; (2) employed strategically placed landmines that resulted in civilian casualties; and (3) intentionally attacked a historic monument protected under international law due to its central role in supporting a militaristic regime.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the competition was conducted virtually by the host institution, the Faculty of Law, Universitas Padjadjaran, in Bandung. The competition consisted of two stages: the Memorials Round and the Oral Rounds. During the Memorials Round, participating teams were required to prepare two legal memorials of 4,000 words each, representing both the Prosecutor and the Defense Counsel. In the Oral Rounds, the Universitas Gadjah Mada delegation successfully advanced to the final round and ultimately secured the title of Champion at the 16th Indonesian National Round of the International Humanitarian Law Moot Court Competition 2021.

The Universitas Gadjah Mada team consisted of second-year law students Dylan Jesse Andrian (Head Delegate), Aida Lathifa O., Arya Yudhistira Darmawan, Talitha Candrakirana, and Cecillia Vinny Kusuma Wardani (Manager), as well as third-year law students Mettio Hario Basara and Astrid Khairunnisa Suhendar (Counsel). Following more than seven months of preparation beginning in April 2021, the FH UGM team achieved several outstanding accomplishments, including: Champion, The 16th Indonesian National Round of the International Humanitarian Law Moot Court Competition 2021; 1st Best Memorial for Prosecutor; 1st Best Oralist – Dylan Jesse Andrian; 2nd Best Oralist – Mettio Hario Basara. Beyond these achievements, the competition provided the delegation with a valuable learning experience and an unforgettable journey in developing their advocacy, legal research, and public speaking skills in the field of international humanitarian law.
