Palestine, Two International Court Issues, and Indonesia: The First National Seminar of the Department of International Law in 2024

Department of International Law has successfully held a National Seminar on Friday (23/02/2024). The seminar that was attended by 116 students from Faculty of Law UGM, 2 lecturers from Universitas Islam Indonesia, 5 general guest, and approximately 300 online participants was held in Building B Auditorium Faculty of Law UGM and through Zoom Meeting as well.

The seminar with the theme, “Palestine, Two International Court Issues, and Indonesia” was aimed to introduce the current status of the Palestine conflict in two parallel cases that proceeded in International Court along with the contribution from Indonesia. Moreover, this seminar was a form of support for the implementation Sustainable Development Goals of SDGs SDGs on the Qualified Education and the 16th point on Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions. Therefore, the 3 speakers that experts in the international law and international relations field was attended this seminar, those are Hasbi Aswar, S.IP., M.A., Ph.D. from Universitas Islam Indonesia, Fajri Matahati Muhammadin, S.H., LL.M., Ph.D., from Faculty of Law UGM, and Prof. Dr. Sigit Riyanto, S.H., LL.M. as the Professor of Faculty of Law UGM.

The first session was presented by Hasbi Answar with the presentation on “Military Operation on the 7th of October 2023 until Today in Political-Historical Context”. He explained about the historical-political context on Palestine and Israel, the reason for Israel 's consecutive attack despite condemnation from countries around the world, the vulnerability of Israel's existence, and the potential end of the occupation. 

The second session was presented by Fajri Matahati with the presentation on “Examining the Provisional Measures Decision of International Courtn and South Aftrica v. Israel Case”. The presentation was started by the explanation on the role of International Court, judicial base of International Court, and the difference between the dispute between statedisputewithadvisory opinion, then continued with the brief explanation on the history of Genocide concept and Genocide Convention forming, why the South Africa sued Israel according to the Genocide Convention, and the timeline of South Africa v. Israel process in International Court. The interlocutory decision by the International Court was not the final decision that brought the general consequences on South Africa v. Israelcase. This session was ended by the presentation on several observations towards the interlocutory decision and the significance of it.

On the last session, Prof. Sigit Riyanto brought a presentation with the topic of “Advisory Opinion Process on International Court and the Analysis on the Indonesia’s Contribution Prospect”. The presentation was started by sharing the contemporary facts and the history between Palestine and Indonesia. The presentation was continued by the explanation on theadvisory opinionthat ever submitted to the International Court regarding the Palestine-Israel case, the current legal issue, and the implication on the advisory opinion. This session was ended by the reflection on the peace and justice.
