Fiat Justitia Ruat Caelum (“Let justice be done though the heavens fall”) is not merely an ancient legal maxim attributed to Lucius Calpurnius Piso Caesoninus. It is also a principle that must be upheld and put into practice by law enforcers.
To shape future law enforcers who uphold integrity and professionalism in pursuing the justice envisioned by society, the Faculty of Law, Universitas Gadjah Mada (FH UGM) provides students with early preparation through the Pelatihan Pembelajar Sukses bagi Mahasiswa Baru Fakultas Hukum Universitas Gadjah Mada (PPSMB FH UGM) 2019 “INTEGRASI”, held over two consecutive days, from 6 to 7 August 2019. The name “INTEGRASI” is an acronym for “Internalisasi Nilai-Nilai Etik dan Integritas bagi Generasi Calon Penegak Hukum di Masa Depan” (Internalization of Ethical Values and Integrity for the Future Generation of Law Enforcers). It reflects the hope that the 2019 Gadjah Mada Muda FH UGM students will grow into individuals who uphold integrity and ethical values. The orientation program was not limited to classroom sessions and an introduction to the Faculty of Law, but also featured a variety of engaging, interactive, and inspiring activities.
On the first day, the program opened with remarks from Prof. Dr. Sigit Riyanto, S.H., LL.M., Dean of the Faculty of Law UGM. This was followed by a seminar entitled “Becoming a Person of Integrity and Upholding Ethics,” delivered by Dr. Laode Muhammad Syarif, S.H., LL.M., Deputy Chairman of the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK), together with Prof. Dr. Sigit Riyanto, S.H., LL.M. The program continued with Focus Group Discussion 1, entitled “Expressing Ideas Through Writing,” which was led by lecturers from the Faculty of Law UGM, followed by Focus Group Discussion 2, entitled “The Dynamics of Law Enforcement in Indonesia,” facilitated by students from various student organizations, institutions, and communities at FH UGM. Despite running from 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., the 2019 Gadjah Mada Muda FH UGM students remained enthusiastic throughout the program.
The second day of PPSMB “INTEGRASI” began with an inspiring talk show featuring prominent FH UGM alumni discussing legal professions and the work of law enforcers. The speakers included Dr. Pri Pambudi Teguh, S.H., M.H., a Justice of the Supreme Court of the Republic of Indonesia; Triweka Rinanti, S.H., M.H., Managing Partner of Triweka Rinanti & Partners; Yualita Widyadhari, S.H., SpN., M.Kn., CIIB., ANZIIF (Snr. Assoc) CIP, Chairperson of the Indonesian Notary Association; and Billy Esratian, S.H., LL.M., a Harvard Law School alumnus who currently works at the Presidential Staff Office of the Republic of Indonesia.
The talk show provided motivation, inspiration, and encouragement for the new students. This was evident from their enthusiasm during the question-and-answer session and their eagerness to take photographs with the speakers at the end of the event. Many students expressed their admiration and their aspirations to become professionals who uphold integrity and professionalism like the speakers. The program continued with a tour de faculty, during which the new students were guided by co-facilitators in groups to explore and learn more about the Faculty of Law UGM. They were then introduced to various student organizations, institutions, and communities that they could join during their studies through presentations and a bazaar featuring the respective organizations.
The series of activities concluded with the announcement of the outstanding participants of PPSMB “INTEGRASI” FH UGM 2019 in several categories: Best Female Participant, Best Male Participant, Best Group, Best Poster, and Best Essay.
Before the 2019 Gadjah Mada Muda FH UGM students were dismissed, all participants, committee members, and lecturers present at the closing ceremony proudly and joyfully sang the Faculty of Law’s anthem together.
