Legal Outreach with Sleman Correctional Facility Residents

FH UGM's Legal Consultation and Aid Center (PKBH), in partnership with the Sleman Class IIB Correctional Facility, held a legal outreach session on Friday, August 26. Held at the facility itself, the session was attended by around 25 residents. Two FH UGM lecturers served as speakers: Prof. Dr. Ari Hernawan, S.H., M.Hum., and Dyah Ayu Widowati, S.H., M.Kn.

The first session was led by Prof. Dr. Ari Hernawan from the Department of Civil Law, covering employment law. He explained that once an employment agreement or contract is settled, it binds both parties — so care must be taken when forming such agreements. Even though the terms of an employment agreement are typically set by the employer, workers hold various rights protected under legislation. Legally, all workers are protected by law from the start to the end of the employment relationship.

The second session, focused on land law, was led by Dyah Ayu Widowati from the Department of Agrarian Law. She explained that Indonesian land law is fundamentally rooted in customary (adat) law. Legally, evidence of physical possession/use of land can override formal proof of ownership — meaning someone holding a land certificate but not actually using the land could lose out to someone without a certificate who is actively cultivating it. That said, she stressed that land certification should still be pursued promptly, since a certificate provides legal certainty and protection for the owner.

After both presentations, the session continued with a Q&A segment for participants and closed with a group photo.
