The Master of Laws Program (MIH) and the Master in Laws (LLM) Program of the Faculty of Law, Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM), organized an orientation program for new students of the 2024 cohort. The program was held over three days, from Wednesday (14/8) to Friday (16/8), and aimed to prepare students for academic life and their upcoming studies.
The third and final day of orientation began with the Graduate Program Inaugural Lecture for all new postgraduate students at the UGM Faculty of Law Class of 2024. The lecture opened with a session on UGM's founding values (ke-Gadjahmada-an) delivered by Dr. Arie Sujito, S.Sos., M.Si., who recalled that UGM was founded during Indonesia's independence struggle, with a commitment to upholding the values of Pancasila: belief in God, humanity, unity, democracy, and social justice. He emphasized that UGM alumni carry a responsibility to uphold these values in their lives.
The inaugural lecture comprised three sessions. Dr. I Dewa Gede Palguna (Universitas Udayana) discussed the rule of law and the challenges of its application in Indonesian elections. Prof. Susi Dwi Harijanti (Universitas Padjadjaran) addressed the importance of legal traditions that maintain integrity and channel lawmaking toward the appropriate political arena. Prof. Dr. Nurhasan Ismail (UGM) discussed principles including the supremacy of law, equality before the law, and due process of law as foundations for the formation and implementation of law.
Following the inaugural lecture, MIH students participated in an Online Research Workshop facilitated by I Gusti Agung Made Wardana, S.H., LL.M., Ph.D. A Humboldt Fellow at the Max Planck Institute for Law in Germany. Wardana covered techniques for finding and evaluating online data sources, including e-books, journal articles, and internet sources, and explained purposive sampling, random sampling, and snowball sampling methodologies, with emphasis on verifying the reputation and validity of sources.

Through this full orientation program, new students at the UGM Faculty of Law are expected to be ready to carry their academic responsibilities with integrity and to make effective use of technology in conducting quality legal research.
