Optimizing the Utilization of Library Services and Facilities Through User Education & Information Literacy Activities at the UGM Faculty of Law Library

Libraries, as information management and provider units, play a crucial role in developing a literate generation. University libraries offer diverse collections and services to meet the information needs of the academic community. Furthermore, with digital facilities and services available, universities are increasingly required to enhance their functions and roles, particularly in disseminating information to users. To optimize library utilization, libraries need to engage in activities that demonstrate and clarify the library's functions to the academic community. One such activity is user education. User education guides users in utilizing and utilizing the information available in the library, whether through search engines, online, or manually.

Perpustakaan Fakultas Hukum Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) bekerja sama dengan Perpustakaan dan Arsip UGM menyelenggarakan kegiatan User Education & Information LiteracyThe Faculty of Law Library of Gadjah Mada University (UGM) in collaboration with the UGM Library and Archives held a User Education & Information Literacy activity. This activity took place on Thursday (15/8/2024) at the UGM Faculty of Law Computer Laboratory. This activity presented speakers namely Lilik Kurniawati Uswah. S.E., M.Si from the UGM Central Library and Archives and Afni Isnaini Aprilia, S.IP from the UGM Faculty of Law Library. This activity was attended by all new students at the undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral levels. This initiative aims to ensure that students are well informed about the various resources available in the library.

In this activity, it was conveyed that Gadjah Mada University not only has a faculty library and vocational school, but also has a central library and a Jakarta campus library that are integrated with each other. The User Education & Information Literacy event is an activity carried out to socialize the various services and facilities offered by the UGM library, both in physical and digital forms. The UGM Library and Archives provides various facilities that can be utilized by students, including the Electronic Theses & Dissertation (ETD) Room, collection loans, a wellness center, a kids corner, Individual Academic Consultation (IAC), Individual Student Support (ISS), Turnitin, and miniclass tutorials, and others. Some services, such as IAC and ISS, may still be unfamiliar to students. IAC is a personal service designed to support students' academic goals, offering consultations on research topics, papers, or thesis strategies from "non-expert professionals." Meanwhile, the ISS service is intended for students who want to publish their work internationally. UGM also provides services for students seeking references through journals and e-books, both internal and external, from international publishers subsidized by UGM, such as Wiley, Ebscohost, Proquest, HeinOnline, Westlaw (Thomson), Statista, and many more. Broad access to these resources is crucial for building a culture of research and academic excellence among students.

The facilities and services at the Faculty of Law Library, Gadjah Mada University (UGM), are more or less the same as those at the central library. A particularly interesting feature of the Faculty of Law Library is the Hukumonline Corner, a legal online pro access service. This service is free for students to access, assisting them in finding legal analyses and databases such as decisions and regulations from central and regional governments. Furthermore, the Faculty of Law Library also features a carel room for individual student study, discussion rooms, and ETD facilities. These resources are designed to create a supportive environment for learning and research, ensuring that students have the tools necessary to succeed in their academic endeavors.

The User Education & Information Literacy activity is a significant step to increase students' understanding of library services and facilities and promote a culture of information literacy. This activity aims to equip students with the skills to navigate and utilize these resources effectively. UGM takes a proactive approach to ensure that all students have access to quality education and information, in line with the SDGs commitment to inclusive and equitable education. In conclusion, the collaboration between the Faculty of Law Library and the UGM Library and Archives reflects a commitment to increasing access to education and information literacy among students. As UGM continues to innovate and expand its library services, UGM remains committed to creating an environment where students can develop academically and professionally.
