On Tuesday (November 26, 2024), at the Grand Tjokro Hotel in Yogyakarta, faculty members from the Department of Islamic Law at the UGM Faculty of Law held a Coordination and Finalization Meeting regarding the proposal for the Study Center for Islamic Law and Society (SCILS). In attendance were the Chair of the Department of Islamic Law, Dr. Hartini, S.H., M.Si., along with all faculty members of the Department of Islamic Law, namely Dr. Muhaimin, S.H., M.Kn., Dr. Yulkarnain Harahab, S.H., M.Si., Dr. Destri Budi Nugraheni, S.H., M.S.I., Dr. Khotibul Umam, S.H., LL.M., and Haniah Ilhami, S.H., LL.M.
The establishment of SCILS is intended to facilitate research on issues related to Islamic law and society, whether conducted by faculty members, students, or in collaboration with partner organizations. This is considered quite important given the massive dynamics and developments of Islamic law in society, including the urgency of conducting in-depth studies of Islamic law in accordance with societal needs. Furthermore, the establishment of SCILS is also intended to address global challenges arising from the growing interest of the global Muslim community in the halal industry—ranging from finance, food, fashion, to sharia-compliant tourism. Additionally, SCILS is expected to contribute to the formulation of national law, given the significant role that Islamic law plays within it.
In addition to being initiated by the Department of Islamic Law, the establishment of SCILS was also supported by several other departments, namely the Department of Business Law, the Department of Civil Law, and the Department of International Law. With a vision of becoming a professional and responsive center for research in the fields of Islamic law and social issues that firmly upholds the values of Pancasila, SCILS is expected to make tangible contributions to various issues arising in society, particularly those related to Islamic law. SCILS’s contributions will continue to advance the realization of Gadjah Mada University as a world-class research university that is actively engaged in issues of social, national, and state life. This aligns with the goals of sustainable development—specifically the 16th point of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which focuses on peace, justice, and strong institutions, and the 4th point, which emphasizes quality education.
