Promoting Public Awareness of Medical Record Confidentiality as a Legal Right: Education on Personal Data Protection in the Healthcare Sector through TVRI Yogyakarta’s Pro Justicia Program

The Legal Consultation and Assistance Center (PKBH) of the Faculty of Law at Gadjah Mada University (UGM), in collaboration with TVRI Yogyakarta, hosted the Pro Justicia program, which in this broadcast focused on the theme “Confidentiality of Medical Records as a Legal Right: Education on Personal Data Protection in the Healthcare Sector.” This event aims to raise public awareness regarding personal data protection issues, particularly in the healthcare sector.

The Pro Justicia program was broadcast from the TVRI Yogyakarta studio on Tuesday (June 10, 2025) from 3:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. WIB, featuring a speaker from UGM. Representing the university was Dr. Airin Liemanto, S.H., LL.M., from the Department of Customary Law, Faculty of Law, Gadjah Mada University. Joining Dr. Airin was Muhammad Oriza Nurfajri, S.Kom., M.IT., a lecturer in the Department of Computer Science and Electronics, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Gadjah Mada University.

Through this event, UGM faculty members addressed the issue of medical record confidentiality, which requires serious attention from both legal and technological perspectives. Although Indonesia has an adequate legal framework in place through the Personal Data Protection Act and other sector-specific regulations, the gap between regulations and practical awareness among the public remains very real. Low legal literacy and limited digital infrastructure in many healthcare facilities pose major challenges to the implementation of safe and comprehensive data protection principles.

For this reason, through this week’s Pro Justicia broadcast, the two guests aim to bridge this gap by providing practical and applicable education to the public and healthcare workers. It is hoped that this broadcast will not only enhance understanding of medical records as a protected legal right but also foster the creation of a healthcare system that is more accountable, safe, and grounded in respect for human rights.

It is hoped that this event will contribute to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Goal 3 on health and Goal 16 on justice and strong institutions. Of course, this initiative is also expected to strengthen partnerships to achieve greater success, in line with the vision of SDG 17.
