UGM Faculty of Law Student Wins Bronze Medal at the 37th National Student Scientific Week

The 37th National Student Scientific Week (Pekan Ilmiah Mahasiswa Nasional ke-37/PIMNAS ke-37) concluded on Friday, October 18, 2024, at the Airlangga Convention Center, Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR). The competition, organized by the National Achievement Centre (Pusat Prestasi Nasional) under the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology (Kemendikbudristek) from October 13–19, was contested by 525 teams from 118 universities across Indonesia.

UGM fielded the largest contingent of any participating university, 54 teams, and won the most medals overall: 36 in total (4 gold, 5 silver, 5 bronze in the presentation category; 10 gold, 6 silver, 6 bronze in the poster category), finishing as the second-place institution overall (Juara Umum 2). That UGM advanced 54 teams out of a pool of 525 from an original 43,000 who submitted proposals speaks to the exceptional quality of its research.

Among the medalists was a multidisciplinary PKM-RSH team, led by I Ketut Aditya Prayoga (Tourism), with members Ni Luh Feby Riveranika (Sociology), Putu Daryatti (Psychology), and Adi Suryadinata (Law), who won a bronze medal in the poster category. Their poster, themed "Child Sex Tourism: Victimization, Traumatization, and the Protection of Minors from Commercial Sexual Exploitation (Case Study: Bali)," addressed the phenomenon of child sexual exploitation in Bali — driven by the proliferation of commercial establishments such as bars, discotheques, clubs, and spas.

The novelty of the theme presented in this PKM-Humanities Research project lies in its emphasis on the perspectives of victims who had become survivors at the time of the interviews, which made the study particularly compelling to present. The poster not only featured illustrative visuals depicting children as victims of commercial sexual exploitation, but also presented concise, dense, and clearly organized information, including research findings on the forms of victimization and traumatization experienced by survivors, the research methods, the time and location of the study, the protective measures developed in response to victimization and trauma, as well as the conclusions of the research.
