To celebrate its 79th anniversary, the Faculty of Law at Gadjah Mada University (FH UGM) held the “Lomba Justicia: Chess” tournament on Friday, February 14, 2025. The competition took place in Room A.201 on the second floor of Building A at FH UGM and was attended by chess enthusiasts from various segments of the academic community.
This chess tournament used a single-elimination system with a scoring system of 2-0 or 2-1. Each participant was required to play the chess piece they were holding and follow specific rules, such as an “open checkmate” being declared an immediate loss and the stipulation that a position threatening the queen or rook (ster) did not need to be announced. In the event of a draw, the winner was determined based on who was playing with the black pieces.
After a fiercely contested tournament, the winners of the Justicia Chess Competition are as follows:
- 1st Place: Trubus
- 2nd Place: Abdullah Zaky S.
This competition not only served as a platform for competition but also fostered the development of critical thinking, strategic planning, and concentration among participants. Through this event, the Faculty of Law at UGM supports Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 4, which focuses on quality education, as chess is a sport that trains mental agility, precision, and sound decision-making.
In addition, this competition also contributes to SDG 3, which focuses on health and well-being. Chess can improve cognitive function, sharpen logical thinking skills, and help reduce stress through an activity that is intellectually challenging yet enjoyable.
Through the Justicia: Chess Tournament, the Faculty of Law at UGM hopes to continue facilitating activities that are not only entertaining but also provide academic and health benefits for the entire academic community. May the spirit of sportsmanship and strategic thinking demonstrated in this competition serve as an inspiration for all future participants.
