Workshop on Strengthening Understanding of the Intersectionality of Human Rights in Freedom of Religion or Belief Held at UGM Faculty of Law

The Faculty of Law of Universitas Gadjah Mada, through its Master of Laws in Litigation Program, in collaboration with the Center for Religious and Cross-cultural Studies (CRCS) UGM and the Freedom of Religion or Belief (FoRB) Clinic of Yogyakarta, organized a Workshop on Strengthening Understanding of the Intersectionality of Human Rights in Freedom of Religion or Belief (FoRB). The workshop was held on Wednesday, 10 June 2026. The event formed part of broader efforts to enhance stakeholders’ understanding of the interconnectedness of human rights issues, diversity, and the protection of vulnerable groups within the context of freedom of religion or belief.

The workshop featured a number of distinguished academics and practitioners, including Dr. Zainal Abidin Bagir, Sri Wiyanti Eddyono, S.H., LL.M. (HR), Ph.D., Dr. Samsul Maarif, and Dr. Arvie Johan. Discussions focused on the relationship between human rights and freedom of religion or belief, as well as various intersectionality issues faced by vulnerable communities. Participants also explored the importance of inter-institutional cooperation in addressing FoRB-related issues in Yogyakarta. The workshop brought together representatives from diverse sectors of society, with the expectation that this multi-stakeholder engagement would strengthen collaboration in the prevention and resolution of cases involving freedom of religion or belief.

The organization of this workshop aligns with the commitment to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 16 (Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions) through the promotion of access to justice, the protection of human rights, and the development of inclusive institutions. Furthermore, the activity supports SDG 10 (Reduced Inequalities) by encouraging the protection of vulnerable and minority groups, as well as SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals) through collaboration among higher education institutions, government agencies, law enforcement authorities, and civil society organizations in fostering a peaceful, just, and diverse society.
