On Wednesday (August 30), the Center for Law, Gender, and Society (LGS) at the Faculty of Law, Gadjah Mada University, organized a visit and research trip to PEKKA Gunungkidul. This visit and research will serve as the first step in a research-based community service initiative titled “Digital Literacy to Prevent Online Crime for PEKKA Members in Gunungkidul Regency.” The survey was conducted by Sri Wiyanti Eddyono, S.H., LL.M. (HR), Ph.D., Annisa Syaufika Y.R., S.H., M.H., and Diantika Rindam Floranti, S.H., LL.M., with the assistance of six students serving as outreach assistants. A total of 30 PEKKA Gunungkidul members participated in this activity as research participants.
Sri Wiyanti Eddyono explained the survey process to collect data on the frequency of respondents’ internet use, the devices they use to access the internet, the types of activities they engage in online, and the apps they frequently use. In addition, the survey also addressed issues related to personal data theft, online loans/electronic transactions, and online sexual violence.
After the respondents completed the survey, the event continued with a Focus Group Discussion (FGD) session, which was divided into three discussion groups. Each discussion group was facilitated by Sri Wiyanti Eddyono, S.H., LL.M. (HR), Ph.D., Annisa Syaufika Y.R., S.H., M.H., and Diantika Rindam Floranti, S.H., LL.M. During the discussion, the facilitators delved deeper into the respondents’ experiences related to issues relevant to the survey. This survey was conducted to develop educational materials for future outreach sessions.
During this FGD session, the team identified several online-based incidents experienced by respondents, their families, and neighbors. For example, there has been a surge in cases of smartphone hijacking after opening unfamiliar links, which turned out to be a scheme to hijack contacts and extort money from them. In addition to these cases, there are many other incidents experienced by the women of PEKKA Gunungkidul, so the available data and experiences serve as a reference for LGS in developing educational materials.
