As a part of learning method that is contextual and experience based, Master of Law Faculty of Law UGM (MIH FH UGM) held an academic visitation to the Yogyakarta Correctional Institution Class IIA on Thursday, (24/4/2025). This event was a part of Correctional Penology and attended by 40 students. Within the process, the students were actively participated in this event that have been started from the morning to the afternoon.
The visitation was started with presentation from the related institution regarding the correctional system, the policy, along with the challenges and innovation that were faced during the rehabilitation process for the inmates. After that, the students were divided into 6 small groups for thefocus group discussionession with the inmates. This discussion opened a reflective room for the students to deeply more understanding the context of the condition, the hope and the obstacles that were faced by the inmates in serving the sentence while preparing themselves to come back to the community.
Aside from the discussion, the students were also introduced with the physical facilities and the correctional programs inside the Correctional Institution, including the room, the recess room, skill training area, and the production room. This experience gave an important insight regarding the correctional system in Indonesia from the perspective of the humanitarian and the social justice.
This event strengthened the contribution of MIH FH UGM towards the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)The first, this visitation reflected the SDG 4: Qualified Education, through the implementation of field-based learning that enhance the theoretical knowledge of the students with the legal reality on the field. Second, this event is also supporting the SDG 10: Reducing Inequalities, with providing a direct interaction that builds the empathy towards the vulnerable community that often stigmatized and even socially excluded. Third, the spirit of the SDG 16: Peace, Justice, and Strong Institution was reflected through the appreciation for the rehabilitation measures and social reintegration that becoming a core in the correctional system. Last, through the partnership between UGM and Yogyakarta Correctional Institution IIA, this event was implementing the spirit of the SDG: Partnership for the Goals, in a form of strategic collaboration between educational institution and the state institutions.
Thus, this visit not only provides a meaningful learning experience for students, but also becomes part of UGM's commitment to producing law graduates who are not only academically competent, but also possess social sensitivity and integrity in supporting inclusive justice in Indonesia.
