UGM Faculty of Law Hosts Notonagoro Public Lecture: Anies Baswedan Discusses the Future of the Rule of Law and Democracy

The Department of Constitutional Law at the Faculty of Law, Gadjah Mada University (FH UGM), in collaboration with Pandekha and the Constitutional Law Society (CLS), is once again hosting the Notonagoro Public Lecture. This academic forum serves as an important platform for discussing fundamental issues related to the rule of law and democracy. For this edition, the public lecture features Anies Baswedan, an Indonesian academic and politician, as the keynote speaker. The discussion will be led by Dr. Zainal Arifin Mochtar, S.H., LL.M., Chair of the Department of Constitutional Law at FH UGM, who will serve as moderator.

The event took place on Tuesday (August 26, 2025) from 3:30 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. WIB in the Auditorium of Building B at the UGM Faculty of Law. Participation was not limited to an in-person audience, as the event was also streamed online via the YouTube channel @law.pandekha to reach a wider audience. Fara Nur Puspitasari from the Constitutional Law Society at the UGM Faculty of Law served as the master of ceremonies, guiding the proceedings. With this hybrid format, the discussion is expected to provide academic value while also fostering interaction between the speakers and the general public.

This edition of the Notonagoro Public Lecture addresses the theme “The Future of the Rule of Law and Democracy.” This theme was chosen in response to the various challenges Indonesia faces in upholding the principles of the rule of law amid increasingly complex political, social, and global dynamics. Anies Baswedan, as the guest speaker, will spark critical reflection on the practice of democracy in Indonesia and its future prospects. Thus, this forum serves not only as a space for learning but also as a platform for academic advocacy aimed at improving national governance.

From the perspective of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), this public lecture supports SDG 16 (Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions). This is evident in its focus on the importance of fair, transparent, and democratic governance as the foundation of government. Furthermore, this event aligns with SDG 4 (Quality Education) as it provides an inclusive, reflective, and participatory public learning space for both students and the general public. By combining academic, practical, and public participation perspectives, this event is expected to strengthen the younger generation’s critical awareness of the role of the rule of law in sustainable development.
