On Friday (25/10/2024), the Faculty of Law UGM, through the Center for Legal Aid Consultation (PKBH) unit, held a Legal Education program at Class IIB Sleman Penitentiary as part of the university’s Tri Dharma of Higher Education, focusing on community service. This event also aligns with the Faculty’s commitment to realizing SDG Goal 16 by fostering inclusive correctional institutions.
The prison outreach program featured two lecturers as speakers: Niken Subekti Budi Utami, S.H., M.Si., from the Department of Criminal Law, Faculty of Law UGM, and Dr. Destri Budi Nugraheni, S.H., M.S.I., from the Department of Islamic Law, Faculty of Law UGM.
Niken delivered a presentation on "Prisoners' Rights" to raise awareness among the inmates about the rights they are entitled to. Meanwhile, Destri discussed "Islamic Inheritance Law" to provide insight on family law, particularly inheritance issues, which could be relevant to inmates involved in inheritance disputes.
The presentation of materials by both speakers was delivered in an interactive and engaging manner, allowing for a successful discussion. The lecturers also provided clear and solution-oriented answers to participants' questions. The implementation of this legal education is expected to be an effort in strengthening an inclusive and peaceful society.
