Faculty of Law Advocates for the Fulfillment of the Rights of Persons with Disabilities
Following the enactment of Law No. 8 of 2016 on Persons with Disabilities, persons with disabilities have a stronger legal basis to advocate for their rights to freedom from discrimination on any grounds; protection against discriminatory treatment; and accessibility and reasonable accommodation to ensure equal opportunities and benefits in pursuit of equality and justice, as guaranteed by the 1945 Constitution of the Republic of Indonesia.
To promote equal rights and opportunities for persons with disabilities and support their well-being, faculty members and students of the Faculty of Law, Universitas Gadjah Mada (FH UGM), have actively participated in drafting Government Regulation Drafts concerning Social Rehabilitation, Social Security, Social Empowerment, and Social Protection for Persons with Disabilities, as well as housing, public services, and disaster protection. On 30–31 January 2018, FH UGM, together with organizations of persons with disabilities and organizations working on disability issues, held a workshop at the University Club to disseminate the results of a social audit on disability-friendly public services and discuss the Government Regulation Draft on housing, public services, and disaster protection for persons with disabilities.
During the workshop, FH UGM lecturers Arvie Johan, Susilo Andi Darma, and Sartika Intaning Pradhani exchanged views with persons with disabilities, disability organizations, and representatives from government ministries and agencies, including the Ministry of Public Works and Housing (PUPR), the National Development Planning Agency (Bappenas), and the Ministry of Home Affairs. Discussions focused on housing, public services, and disaster protection for persons with disabilities. Through this initiative, FH UGM hopes that persons with disabilities will have greater access to inclusive housing, public services, and disaster protection in the future. SIP
