Yogyakarta, August 30, 2023 – An enlightening Focus Group Discussion (FGD) on the complexities of the procedures for the joint inauguration and dismissal of the President and/or Vice President was jointly organized by Group I of the Research Body of the People’s Consultative Assembly of the Republic of Indonesia (MPR RI) and the Faculty of Law at Gadjah Mada University (UGM). The event took place on August 30, 2023, from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. WIB, in the Krakatau Room at the Hyatt Regency Yogyakarta.
A total of 21 participants, including leading constitutional law experts and members of Group I of the MPR RI Research Body, gathered to examine this significant constitutional provision. The UGM Faculty of Law itself sent the following speakers:

– Dr. Mahaarum Kusuma Pertiwi, S.H., M.A., M.Phil.

The event opened with a welcome address and an introduction to the MPR RI Research Body—a supporting body tasked with evaluating and reviewing issues and problems related to Indonesia’s constitutional system—delivered by Drs. Djarot Saiful Hidayat, M.S., Chair of Group I of the MPR RI Research Body. This was followed by remarks from Drs. Heribertus Jaka Triyana, S.H., M.A., LL.M., as Vice Dean for Research, Community Service, and Information Systems, which was then followed by presentations from the speakers.
Following the presentation of the material—the main agenda item—an open discussion and interactive Q&A session took place between the speakers and the FGD participants. This event brought together diverse perspectives, fundamental questions, and careful analysis regarding Indonesia’s constitutional framework, the complexities of presidential inauguration and removal from office, and the transformative impact of amendments to the 1945 Constitution. This academic exploration will undoubtedly provide a deeper understanding of Indonesia’s evolving constitutional paradigm.
This event represents the Faculty of Law at UGM’s commitment to the three pillars of the Tri Dharma of higher education: education, research, and community service. Furthermore, academic discussions with institutions and agencies are also part of the efforts to achieve the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), specifically Goal 2 (Quality Education) and Goal 17 (Partnerships for the Goals).
