The Department of Islamic Law at the Faculty of Law, Gadjah Mada University (UGM), successfully hosted the 12th Series of Online Legal Seminars with the theme “The Dynamics of Sharia Banking Law in Indonesia.” The event, held on Friday (September 29, 2023), took place via the Zoom platform and was live-streamed on the FH UGM Knowledge YouTube channel.
The event was attended by 200 participants, including members of the UGM academic community, legal practitioners such as notaries and attorneys, as well as banking professionals including civil servants, employees, and members of the general public. With such a large number of participants, this event served as an important forum for discussing the development of Islamic banking law in Indonesia.
The main theme of the event, “The Dynamics of Islamic Banking Law in Indonesia,” is a highly relevant topic in the context of the development of the Islamic economy and finance in the country. Indonesia has long been one of the world’s largest centers for Islamic banking, and a deep understanding of the laws governing this sector is crucial.
This 12th series of Online Legal Education also featured a leading expert in the field, Dr. Khotibul Umam, S.H., LL.M., a lecturer in the Department of Islamic Law at the Faculty of Law, UGM. He discussed aspects of Islamic law related to Islamic banking and provided in-depth insights into the legal framework governing this sector in Indonesia. In addition, the organizers also invited Dr. Ardiansyah Rakhmadi, Lc., M.S.I., a Senior Analyst at the Directorate of Sharia Banking Regulation and Development of the Financial Services Authority (OJK). Dr. Ardiansyah discussed the OJK’s role in regulating and developing Islamic banking in Indonesia, as well as offering a regulator’s perspective.
This discussion was particularly important given the ongoing developments in Islamic banking law and shifts in global economic trends. Participants had the opportunity to ask questions directly to the speakers, share their views, and gain a better understanding of the laws affecting the Islamic banking sector in Indonesia.
This event was organized by the Department of Islamic Law at the UGM Faculty of Law, which has long been a pioneer in education and research on Islamic law and Islamic banking in Indonesia. Through this outreach program, the department continues to contribute to enhancing public understanding of legal issues related to Islamic banking.
This event is not only a platform for sharing knowledge but also a positive step in supporting the rapid growth of the Islamic banking sector in Indonesia. It is hoped that similar events will continue to be held to keep pace with the ongoing changes and developments in the field of Islamic banking law.
This 12th Series of Online Legal Outreach is tangible evidence of the commitment of UGM and legal and Islamic banking practitioners to maintaining and enhancing legal understanding in this field. In addition to implementing the Tri Dharma, this online legal outreach also embodies Sustainable Development Goal 7—quality education—and Goal 17—partnerships for the goals.
